Gonorrhea has taken many forms over the last few decades. The strain that people acquire today isn't the same one that previous generations had to deal with. In fact, it might not be the same strain that infected people a little over 10 years ago. That's because gonorrhea, a sexually transmitted disease (STD), has become resistant to most of the antibiotics that we have used to combat it over the last three decades.

That's right: penicillin and various tetracyclines have all stopped working against the most prevalent strains.

fukking a$$holes taking antibiotics when they don't need it, and when they do, they don't finish their cycle.

Stupid fukks. In 2011 I got MRSA (super resistant staph infection) after doing jiu-jitsu, and I almost lost my leg. It went from a small pimple above my knee to the size of a large grapefruit in 12-18 hours.

One of the most terrifying experiences in my whole life. I know MRSA isn't Gonorrhea but it all goes back to people not finishing their meds. Staph, mostly in the form of MRSA, is literally killing a shyt load of people in 2014, all because of this same root issue.

My heart goes out you and his family. I'm sorry. I don't know either of you, obviously, but it's one of my worst fears, and I know people that have had very close calls. That's awful. It's horrible that you lost your friend.

Do you mind if I ask, did he just get treated too late? Or did his body just not react to the antibiotics? Or was he already sick and then got it?

It's not simply a matter of improper use of Antibiotics.

Evolution is going to happen no matter what. It's not a question of if it will happen, it's a question of when. Cipro's Mechanism of action actually promotes evolution. There is nothing that we can really do about it. Every bacteria your body undergoes an extreme selection event every time you take an antibiotic, even the "Probiotic" bacteria that line your intestinal track.

Bacteria can share DNA, they can form Biofilm colonies, and the can develop resistance even with proper Antibiotic use.

Fluoroquinolones and Carbepenem antibiotics are the most recently developed Antibiotics, and they are actually quite old. The FDA needs loosen regulations around antibiotics to make Innovation in Antibiotic technology more profitable.

Europe and other countries now employ Bacteria Phages (modified viruses that are programed to fight bacteria). I don't think that this technology is even allowed in the united states.

Misleading title

More ABx resistance is present, but gonorrhea is still easily treated

Bottom line is docs need to prescribe less ABx to meet patient demands. And patients need to stop self-diagnosing with webMD and demanding pills for minor issues.

I realize that I'm over-simplifying things, but isn't the improper use of antibiotics at least a small contributing factor? Great post byt the way. Very insightful.
