My favorite 2D one is CD. Favorite 3D is Sonic Adventure 2.
Advance is underrated, and so is Battle, which is actually in my top 5 Sonic games.
I wish Sega would make another sonic battle. The chiptuned music was much better than I thought it would be, and that's on top of the gameplay.
I still got my cartridge.
It was pretty cool that it linked to Battle too. I had a Dreamcast and a PS2, So I only had the original Adventure 2.

Sonic 3 and Knuckles gets my vote. It’s one of the most consistently fun and enjoyable 2D platforming games ever made.
The levels, the bosses, the speed, the soundtrack (MJ), the secrets, the Doomsday zone... all of it is 
The only weak point for me is the barrel of doom in Carnival Night Zone. (which isn’t that bad once you figure it out)
Sonic 2 would be the runner up IMO. The first half of the game is goated (chemical plant zone
) but the level design started lowkey falling off near the end.
The inescapable spike pit in Mystic Cave zone
(Falling in there as Super Sonic
)
The enemy placement in Oil Ocean
The crabs and grasshoppers in Metropolis zone
Tails’ AI in the special stages was also trash
That first half (Emerald Hill, Chemical Plant, Aquatic Ruins, Casino Night, Hill Top) is still legendary though.
