I love the figure four, but it's not a finisher as much as it is a set up/build up move :manny:

Not today but it used to matter with Greg Valentine and Flair...flair used it to pin people all the time. They would go unconscious.

No he didn't :russ: I mean, sure, it did happen sometimes but he very rarely finished matches with the figure four.

I always thought the ankle lock looked stupid as a finisher. I know it's painful, but for the amount of time someone would be in it and tap out always came across as dumb. Why wouldn't Shamrock/Angle put full torque in as soon as they could to make them tap out? Nothing would be preventing them from doing it. There's no reason that hold should be on for longer than 5-10 seconds.

So for that, I'll vote for the Figure Four. The Figure Four is also more iconic.

the being in it for long periods of time didn't happen til Angle started using it as a finish....folks immediately tapped when Shamrock put it on

Picked the Figure Four cause it's more iconic. Both finishers have been used by a ton of other people though. I will say that it seems like the Figure Four has gotten to the point to where it's damn near a transition move outside of Charlotte's version. The Ankle Lock can be easily reversed in hilarious fashion unless you lock the entire leg like Kurt Angle has always done.

Both kind of represent the old school vs the new school to me. The Figure Four, while painful looking, requires more setup and a little bit more contrivance to it, whereas the Ankle Lock is such a simple yet vicious looking move that can be slapped on much easier by comparison. Seeing somebody like Cody submit someone using the FF feels like a throwback, whereas the Ankle Lock fits in even more today than it did back in the 90’s and early 00’s with seemingly everyone being some type of pseudo MMA type performer. I’m going with the Ankle Lock because I remember believing it as a legit finish since I was a kid, especially in big time marquee matches with Kurt Angle.
