If you're really looking for old classics, anything Hitchcock fits the bill:
STRANGERS ON A TRAIN : Robert Walker's performance is outstanding.
That tennis scene alone was creepy.

I will go on the record by saying this has THE BEST CAR CHASE SCENE in movie history. Doubt you'd find anything that comes closer with the exception of Ronin.
