:wow: @ even the teacher goin in

My view on these names is this: If you can explain the significance/meaning of the name, then it is a good name. If not, then what the hell are you doing?

If I named my child Lathomas, then I'd be giving him a meaningless name. All I did was add 2 letters to an already existing name and hindered his chances of economic gain. If I wanted to give him a non-european name, then I'd actually conduct research and name him something like Hannibal. That is a name with power behind it, and it is the name of a brilliant African strategist, or something like Imhotep(ancient egyptian polymath), Nzinga(Queen of an african empire), or Sundiata(first emperor of mali) etc. The fact that these names that these kids are getting have no meaning to them or history just tells me that the parents really didn't plan their family, yet were still defiant enough to want to give their child a "unique" name. Names can have an impact in that way because associations (as unfair as many of them are), do exist.

It sucks, but it's a reality of life for many minorities.

Here's the way I see it, regardless cacs is never gonna accept us so why change our names to appease them when they dont like our black asses anyway? Why do we as a community keep on trying to appease whites when it doesn't do anything at all? They hate us for existing.

I'm not gonna lie though I did shorten my last name but it wasn't for c00n reasons. :what:

Weak minded girl. Instead of standing up for herself she conformed...and for what? To please people who don't like her. What is wrong with a black name? If a white name is acceptable, so should a black name.....I swear white people can be so evil.

While this is a valid point, you have to consider the possibility that the names these people give their kids were developed pretty much on the spot with no foresight put into them, which shows a lack of preparedness for parenthood. A lot of the names that were common among black people in america were biblical in nature(Isaiah, Matthew, Joshua, Aaron etc.) and you had quite a few with ancient Roman names (Octavius, Marcus, Caesar), but these names that these kids are getting aren't on some "I'm rebelling against the white establishment" shyt, they're just made up on the spot and don't sound fly at all to anyone but the person who thought it would be cool to name their child that. I mean just look at this thread for example, you have a lot of black people going in on people with names like shaunequa and ladonitarius.

Part of me wonders what the name of the child would be in this case if the father had more of a say :mjpls:

No, because trends in "acceptable" names lean towards going back to older, more Biblical and Victorian era names. Well-to-do families usually name their kids after other family members and such, so the names keep propagating. Yes, there are white peeps named Tyrone, but let's not act like that shyt is as common as the name John or Steve or some ish. Also, Tyrone is Irish and Greek. Black people just happen to be the popular demographic for it in this country.

Also, look at this ish... the top 5 names for boys and girls for the last one hundred years.

What people aren't understanding or aren't saying for some reason is that the REAL problem is that there is not a single thing wrong with "Black" names other than that black people have them. The issue is with racists and our current white power structure. White people name their kids some ridiculous shyt too and there is little to no stigma attached. The stigma that our names have is only there because they're associated with being black, which nobody wants outside of appropriating popular aspects of our "culture." Our names have not and likely will not be one of the things other cultures appropriate. From a white person's perspective, you don't go backwards or down to move up.

Preach reverend!

I always found this debate interesting

Have you ever thought about your name? The sounds you have to make to say it? It's just random sounds that we attached meaning to like any other word. What does a proper name sound like? Why?
