That deal isnt as crazy as it sounds. If bonilla took the money upfront and invested it at like 5-10% a year and kept reinvesting the interested he would of made 2-3 times his money. It was a good deal for him cuz he didnt have access to the money earlier and thus coudn't blow it.

that's what makes it even more special to me. He/his agent knew this and they convinced the Mets to do it :banderas:

maybe not "thievery" but an incredible financial decision. It could have happened that way if he invested it at that amount but there was no fool proof way of knowing that would work.

The Mets didn't lose anything they actually made money on this deal from the interest they earned off his money for decades. Its more about Bonilla's agent knowing Bonilla would probably blow it or make bad investments and than cutting a deal with the Mets and since they didn't have anything to lose on the deal they said sure why not. No one got owned in this deal the agent just did his client a huge favor. It's kind of like that Allen Iverson reebok deal where someone was looking out for him and told reebok to hold onto 30 mill of the contract until he reaches a certain age.

Pretty sure that was supposed to be the outcome but it didn't pan out like that. The owners had their money tied with Bernie Madoff who had fake accounts. I'll see if I can pull up the article on it...I think someone on ESPN wrote it

edit:Why the Mets will pay Bobby Bonilla $1.19 million today (and every July 1 through 2035)
