Gfycat.com shuts down on September 1 and all Gifs will be taken down

Beforehand they were just being directed to the source, and the source is the best place to get it, if you didn't save the gif before the source died then that's on you, these sites don't even embed/share them properly but get all the traffic

nah, before hand site admins would get pissed at people hotlinking to other sites and replace the gif with something obscene.

sources should be mentioned by the people sharing the link if it isn't already apparent.

You must have forgot. The source was often a small site that would crash if the gif went viral. The owners of sites would ban hotlinking to their content and if you didn’t stop they would replace the gif you linked with something random, sometimes gay porn. shyt was terrible.
