How does the chiney boy, George, know that slaves didn't have any sense of worth or respect for themselves as Human beings? Because I didn't see him show any evidence of it. Well, besides giving his own opinion from the point-view of what social ranking the slaves occupied and ad-hom attacks directed toward Clarence, but that isn't evidence for how THEY felt/viewed themselves.
Just look at the evidence within history, so many slave persisted to be free despite how the larger population restricted them. I'm sure ppl like Harriet Tubman perceived herself to have a strong sense of dignity and humanity, which I think was the core point that Clarence was making. Dignity is a subjective experience like any feeling a human can have. It's innate and some ppl are strong-willed regardless of their circumstance.
