Latino is a word used to describe Latin Americans only on this side of the Atlantic. Those people are well aware that they are NOT Spaniards for the most part so Lopez would never make that mistake. Kinda like how those who claim Italian here would shut the fukk up if they ever set foot in Italy

Many words we use to describe Latin Americans are only used here. For example the term "hispanic" was invente/adopted by the U.S. Census bureau back in the 70s if I'm not mistaken. Why? Because they were tired of all the different classifications of various Spanish speakers ethnicity so they figured they'd bunch them all up in one group. It's almost like the one-step rule. In the U.S. you're not métisse or mullato were just gonna pile you up with all the others non and call you black just so the pure whites don't have potential traitors among them
