Ron Johnson Says 'Putin Will Not Lose the War,' Votes Against Ukraine Aid

Ron Johnson Says ‘Putin Will Not Lose the War,’ Votes Against Ukraine Aid

Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson has elaborated on his decision to go against a measure to allow the House of Representatives to vote for further aid to Ukraine, saying that Russia's leader Vladimir Putin "will not lose the war."

On Monday night, a bipartisan coalition of senators approved motions to push forward a package of further aid to countries including Ukraine and Israel. Senators voted in a majority to end dilatory debate on the $95 billion package, setting up a final vote for early Tuesday morning to send it to the House. Johnson, a Republican, was among a large group of GOP senators who voted against it.

Speaking on conservative news network Real America's Voice, Johnson said that, while Putin was "a war criminal", some of the things the Russian president said in his interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, that aired last week, were right.

"Our policy should be focused on how do we bring Vladimir Putin to the table," Johnson said.

"We're cutting off our nose to spite our face with some of these sanctions," he added, saying that it was making American dollars less important as Russia starts to trade in other currencies.

Johnson said: "A lot of the points that Vladimir Putin made are accurate. They're obvious, and so many of our people here in Washington D.C. are just ignoring that, making people believe like Ukraine can win. Putin won't lose. Putin will not lose. He's not going to lose."

Johnson added that people needed to accept this reality to deal with the war and bring it to a close.

Newsweek contacted representatives for Johnson by email for comment.

The package politicians are deliberating would allocate $60 billion in aid to Ukraine's military operation, $14 billion to Israel and US military operations in the region and more than $8 billion to US partners in the Indo-Pacific region, including Taiwan. It also allocates nearly $10 billion for humanitarian efforts in Ukraine, Israel and Gaza.

Republicans have long argued that any additional aid to Ukraine should be tied to additional border security funding, amid soaring encounters on the southern border.

In a statement, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson criticized the deal, and said it lacked border security provisions. "House Republicans were crystal clear from the very beginning of discussions that any so-called national security supplemental legislation must recognize that national security begins at our own border," he said.

He added: "America deserves better than the Senate's status quo."

On Monday, Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat, said the weekend votes demonstrated "beyond doubt that there's strong support" for advancing the foreign aid package.

Schumer said: "These are the enormously high stakes of the supplemental package: our security, our values, our democracy. It is a down payment for the survival of western democracy and the survival of American values."

He added: "The entire world is going to remember what the Senate does in the next few days. Nothing—nothing—would make Putin happier right now than to see Congress waver in its support for Ukraine; nothing would help him more on the battlefield."

During his interview with Carlson, which represented the first time the Russian leader was interviewed by Western media since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Putin suggested that Russia was open to peace talks with Ukraine, but claimed that the United States was getting in the way.

Fox News Blasts Republicans for Killing 'Strongest' Border Bill

Published Feb 15, 2024 at 5:40 AM ESTUpdated Feb 15, 2024 at 5:42 AM EST

House Votes To Impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas

The Chief Political Analyst at Fox News has criticized hardline Republicans for killing a border bill negotiated in the Senate.

"I think these are a couple of issues that put Republicans in peril of looking like literally a do-nothing Congress," Brit Hume told the station on Wednesday, referring to the border security bill shot down by the House and the potential rejection of funding for Ukraine.

The Context

The GOP-led House struck down the $118 billion bill in the Senate on February 7, with conservative hardliners arguing the legislation does not go far enough in its efforts to end illegal immigration.

A bill of around $95.3 billion in Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan was approved in a vote in the Senate on Tuesday, but House Speaker Mike Johnson has said it won't make it to the House floor.

The package includes $9.15 billion in humanitarian aid to give to conflict zones like Gaza, the West Bank and Ukraine.

Hume argued Republicans were "in danger of losing the advantage they have vis à vis Biden on the issue of the border and on the issue of Ukraine funding, Israel funding, funding to defend Taiwan because they are refusing to act on these measures that would deal with that..."

Newsweek has approached Speaker Johnson's office for comment via an email outside of working hours.

Views

In a statement on Monday, Johnson said: "[In] the absence of having received any single border policy change from the Senate, the House will have to continue to work its own will on these important matters."

The following day, President Joe Biden urged Johnson to bring the bill to the House so it could be passed. "I call on the speaker to let the full House speak its mind and not allow a minority of the most extreme voices in the House to block this bill even from being voted on," the president said.

"This bipartisan bill sends a clear message to Ukrainians and to our partners and to our allies around the world—America can be trusted, America can be relied upon and America stands up for freedom," Biden continued. "We stand strong for our allies, we never bow down to anyone, and certainly not to Vladimir Putin."

What's Next?

Johnson and Republican hardliners have demanded the foreign aid package include funding for border security. They rejected the $118 billion aid package, including $20 billion for securing the U.S.-Mexico border, brought by a group of Senate Republicans and Democrats last week.

GOP so 'stupid' that Russia 'can feed disinfo straight into their veins': Morning Joe

MSNBC

MSNBC's Joe Scarborough ripped Republicans for swallowing lies that were fed to them from Russian intelligence.

The GOP's star witness in the House impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden has been arrested for lying to the FBI, and he admitted to investigators that evidence he fed to lawmakers had come from sources with ties to Russian intelligence, which the "Morning Joe" host said that was more evidence that Donald Trump and the Republican Party are beholden to Vladimir Putin.

"Just shocking, you have Russian security services deciding, hey, we can just send unfiltered crap straight to Congress," Scarborough said. "We don't even have to worry about it being filtered by intel services, as we heard the report earlier, it is just shocking, and why is that? Because Republicans hate Joe Biden more than they fear Vladimir Putin. It's really sick. Trump, once again, and Republicans being played once again by Vladimir Putin."

"Putin has Republicans on a string," Scarborough added. "Think about the fact that Vladimir Putin understands that Republicans are so stupid now in the House, even with the help of their legal counsel, Arnold the pig from 'Green Acres,' that Republicans are so stupid in the House, they can feed Russian disinformation straight into the veins of the United States Congress. straight in, and because they hate them so much. And then you have idiots running around talking about how they have got this disinformation that will bring down Joe Biden, like they depended on Russian disinformation, they depended on an international fugitive illegally selling Iranian oil to communist China... and all of this to try to take down Joe Biden and none of it is hitting, and we've been saying this for months. Keeps making them look worse."

Jim Jordan Spirals When Asked About Losing His Star Biden Witness

House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan is desperately trying to spin the damning news on ex–FBI informant Alexander Smirnov.

Representative Jim Jordan seems to be struggling with the realization that Republicans’ impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden appears to be founded on a bed of lies peddled by the Russian government.

On Wednesday, the Ohio Republican got caught up in his own words, insisting that the inquiry still had merit, despite the Justice Department indictment against its primary witness, Alexander Smirnov.

“You said the 1023 is the most corroborating piece of information you have,” CNN’s Manu Raju prompted the Freedom Caucus politician on Wednesday, referring to the FBI’s FD-1023 form that documents Smirnov’s claims, which he is now accused of completely making up. In December, Jordan claimed the 1023 form constituted the “key” impeachable offense.

“It corroborates but it doesn’t change the fundamental facts,” Jordan responded, trying to flip the script and maintain that Biden was still involved in his son’s business dealings during his vice presidency.

But, of course, those facts are untrue. On Tuesday, the Justice Department revealed that Smirnov admitted to prosecutors that “officials associated with Russian intelligence were involved” in developing the Hunter Biden narrative.

According to a new court filing, Smirnov told investigators he was in contact with “four different [top] Russian officials,” two of whom were the “heads of the entities they represent.”

Ultimately, Smirnov’s testimony—and the GOP’s ongoing turmoil to save the impeachment probe against the president—serves as just another staining example of how effectively the Russian government is capable of infiltrating and undermining U.S. elections.

“It targeted the presumptive nominee of one of the two major political parties in the United States. The effects of Smirnov’s false statements and fabricated information continue to be felt to this day,” prosecutors wrote.

On Thursday, special counsel David Weiss announced the indictment of Smirnov on one count of making a false statement and one count of creating a false record, related to what he told the FBI in 2020 about alleged corruption by the Biden family and its connection to Ukrainian-owned Burisma Holdings.

Republicans had spent months building up the hype around Smirnov as a witness, isolating his allegation that Biden had pocketed millions of dollars from the Ukrainian company as the centerpiece of their probe.

On Tuesday, attorneys for the president’s son, Hunter Biden, argued that the “Smirnov allegations infected this case,” and that the special counsel threw out Biden’s plea deal while following Smirnov “down his rabbit hole of lies.”

Meanwhile, legal experts are predicting an unpretty ending for Jordan and other GOP representatives hawking the conspiracy.

“Jim Jordan, Chuck Grassley, and James Comer were either duped by Smirnov and the Kremlin—or they were in on it,” Tristan Snell, a lawyer and former assistant attorney general for New York state, argued on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. “Either way, DOJ must subpoena every single communication Jordan, Grassley, and Comer had with or about Smirnov and anything related.”

“Either way—because either they are material witnesses—or they’re co-conspirators,” Snell added. “They have ZERO grounds to quash the subpoenas.”

It doesn't change the facts???

Let's review:

Every witness Republicans brought forward said there was no wrongdoing by Joe Biden.

They combed through all of Biden's bank records and found no wrongdoing.

Senate Republicans investigated the fake Giuliani conspiracy long before House Republicans started this nonsense and found no wrongdoing by Joe Biden.

The FBI told House Republicans that the FD-1023 was an unconfirmed allegation and that there was an ongoing investigation. House Republicans knew the information came from Russian agents, and yet they ran with it.

Republicans admitted they never expected Biden to be impeached, they just wanted the headlines to sow doubt.

Trump has Giuliani go make a conspiracy because Trump was mad the Mueller report was exposing him. Giuliani worked with multiple Russian agents to create and spread these lies.

Russians interfered with the 2016 and 2020 elections on Trump's behalf and Trump associates met with and shared information with Russian agents.

The facts, Mr. Jordan is you knew it was a lie all along but you were willing to work with agents from a hostile foreign nation to undermine our elections in order to try and help your cult leader.

All of the Republicans involved with this should be on trial.
