@DKThomp
I have no idea how this affects Musk’s behavior in Washington, but the situation with Tesla is
- total unit sales declined in 2024
- meanwhile, he did his very best to alienate Democratic consumers
- then, Tesla sales in Europe fell 50%
- then, Tesla shipments in China fell 49%
[Quoted tweet]
Holy shyt, Tesla is just getting absolutely annihilated in China.

Some context on seeing Tesla silver linings for Q2 here (I personally think the brand damage is going to stick in global sales but we’ll all see soon)
[Quoted tweet]
Haha, sorry. Model Y refresh. The best selling car in the world was unavailable to buy for a short time/consumers knew to wait for the new model.
Also, BYD, the fastest growing auto company in the world, and the most Tesla-like Chinese competitor had similar results: down 40% month over month in January.
Seasonality is real.

@sspencer_smb
this is part of media clickbait then creating a confirmation bias loop. noah falls for this every time because of his views on china.

this stupidity is your *alpha*.
--tesla is transitioning globally to a new Model Y.
--this transition reduces supply for a short period of time.
--next month headline: "China sales up 100% from February". $TSLA

@DKThomp
It’s your expectation then that global Q1 shipments will be up YoY?
5/21
@calebhannan
Derek you’re so much better than this.
There is a straightforward explanation for those last two points (that’s explained further if you look at auto sales writ large in January and February). Go one step further, please.

@DKThomp
Can you just tell me what the explanation is?

@shacrw_
i've read the context others provided but there's def some brand damage.

folks are even buying bumper stickers.
futurism obviously did an interview with a guy who sells these. 10k sold.

Good. The stock should go to zero next.

No wonder @elonmusk wants to use his influence to buy his cars using US taxpayers money. He clearly has a lot of excess stocks. Manufacturing has yo be slashed as he will have no storage space soon.

@mikemaletic
You could look at companies doing the opposite during the prior era, e.g., Disney’s left-lean during the past few years in spite of a big base of conservative customers, or Bud Light.
Whether what Musk is doing hurts or helps depends ultimately on the quality of the product. Disney can’t keep people away no matter what they do; Bud Light, different story.
At the margins, Musk’s engagement may make a difference, but I suspect Tesla – as a product company – is good enough that they’ll do fine in the long term. (Relying on China is a risky strategy right now, for reasons that don’t necessarily have to do with the particular politics of the CEO of a given company.)
Besides, I think Musk saw, right or wrong, that continued Democratic rule was a major impediment to his plans – see, e.g., California costal commission – and that he needed to roll the dice by getting involved. He’s not a dumb guy, believe it or not.

@ChrisOldman4
A lot of prognosticators (e.g. Matt Yglesias) warned and mocked repeatedly based on the presumption that Musk would be sycophantically soft on China to ensure the Teslas sold there.

@karlbykarlsmith
I really think he is betting the farm of FSD and doesn't car what the interim sales look like.

@emre_mayo
There is no way Tesla can compete with the Chinese firms. That's probably the real reason his sales fell in China and Europe.
I drive one, it's a great car. But if I could have bought a BYD for 30% less I would have.

Don't cry.

I'm sure the richest man in the world will somehow survive.

Price wars in China though, plus it sounds anecdotally like the newest BYD vehicles are pretty good.
