  • The Dutch pension fund ABP sold its Tesla stake over Elon Musk's pay and the company's working conditions, a report says.
  • ABP disagreed with Musk's compensation package and voted against it in June.
  • ABP didn't respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

A Dutch civil-service pension fund has sold its entire stake in Tesla over disapproval of CEO Elon Musk's pay package and working conditions at the company, a report says.

Stichting Pensioenfonds ABP, one of Europe's largest pension funds, sold 2.8 million shares in the electric-vehicle maker in September because it disagreed with Musk's pay package, the Dutch outlet Het Financieele Dagblad reported Friday. The report didn't detail the fund's specific concerns about labor conditions at the company.

A spokesperson for ABP, which manages $552 billion overall, didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider. Bloomberg reported that ABP's Tesla stake was valued at about $585 million.

In a statement to the NL Times, ABP said that "we cannot and do not need to invest in everything" and that the divestment wasn't politically motivated. Musk has been a prominent supporter of President-elect Donald Trump and is co-leading a commission called the Department of Government Efficiency.

In 2018, Tesla's board and shareholders voted in favor of a performance-based compensation plan. The same year, a shareholder sued Tesla and Musk, arguing that Musk influenced the board's decision through his personal relationships with board members, including his brother. In January 2024, a Delaware judge ruled to strike down Musk's compensation package, siding with a shareholder. The stock option-based package could be worth tens of billions of dollars.

In June, the EV maker held a second vote, which led to shareholder approval of Musk's pay. ABP voted against the pay package and called it "controversial and exceptionally high."

Last month, the judge, Chancellor Kathaleen St. J. McCormick, once again ruled against the compensation package, saying that Tesla's June shareholder vote wasn't enough to pass the package.

Tesla's Model Y was the best-selling car in the Netherlands in 2024, but the carmaker's sales have been declining in Europe. New Tesla car registrations from January to November 2024 fell more than 15% compared with the same period in 2023, according to European Automobile Manufacturers' Association data.

Tesla is worth about $1.27 trillion, and its stock has risen about 74% in the past year.

The company didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from BI.

I'm surprised at how disliked Elon Musk is in Britain. Even two thirds of Conservative voters have an unfavourable opinion of him. He's even more disliked than the Prime Minister.

I worry Elon has no idea how much he has damaged his personal brand in the UK. He thinks he's just tweeting away, and meanwhile ordinary British people now think of him like some sinister rich bad guy in a Batman movie.

@elonmusk
Don’t be a retard who believes bogus polls

4/32
@paulg
I was thinking mainly of conversations I've had with ordinary people. I don't think you realize the size of the gap between how your tweets about the UK seem to people in Texas and how they seem to people in the UK.

He can't be in cahoots with the Epstein related organizations, so we have no choice but to curb the media manipulation of the organizations to criticizes Elon.

I think it is important to protect all of his ex-girlfriend's children, while at the same time creating a situation where his ex-girlfriend and her children will never be used by the Epstein-related organizations somehow “nonviolently”.

The Epstein-related organizations are threatening Elon because they believe they can use his ex-gf and children to steal his assets, companies, and technologies.

Taro Aso has been pouring money from Japan into the organizations somehow via Joichi Ito. I think we should stop that and think of other ways too to do stop their unfair media manipulation.

Hello, Earth calling Paul? Are you there?

@bugsofwalmart
Does it translate to lower sales though? He’s not well liked by the people that buy electric cars here and it doesn’t seem to matter.

@KashPrime
The problem with an oligarchy is you can't do anything to change or remove such figures.

11/32
@andreasklinger
yea got the same experience

imho the problem is that he in the name of "free speech and economic expansion" promotes parties that are frequently against free press, pro russia, anti european collaboration

forcing the left/right pov of the states on europe just doesnt work

12/32
@EverFallibly
Doesn’t seem to be impacting Tesla ownership in London.

13/32
@Timmystravels
Only the woke left think this

14/32
@paulg
That's definitely false. The mums and dads I run into at dinner parties are so far from woke that they've never even heard of SJWs.

@flynnrobinson_
As a Brit, I've always been a fan of Elon and I know many who still like him too!

I live in London and I’m part of many tech communities here. I can confirm this is true.

One questionable poll, and suddenly it's a storm in a teacup? The truth is, this isn't really about the poll. It’s about something else- your desire to be admired and appreciated like he is. And now, instead of appreciating his effort, you're trying to sully his rep and tear him down. Why not acknowledge it for what it is? Envy.

19/32
@PedroCoSilva
and who made sure that happened? the legacy media?

20/32
@SelfInvested009
Don't worry, @elonmusk. I know how it feels to play the bad guy that everyone hates because, secretly, they know he's right

21/32
@NandipMakwana
It's not just about "tweeting away" but like many other billionaires he thinks that he can "get away" from anything just because he is the richest person on the earth. And just like most ordinary people and their view about rich guys, ordinary British people are absolutely right.

22/32
@chirpichirp
He could "interfere" in France, for our good.

23/32
@pourteaux
i wonder what stops americans from realizing the same

24/32
@VictorMethos
I’m not seeing him say anything too crazy; is there a particular reason they don’t like him? Do they just not like Americans involved in their politics?

25/32
@Chaos2Cured
I have a problem with reports like this because there is such a bias and anger because of envy.

Have they done the same poll with Bill Gates? •

@togl_ai
I dont think he cares that much

29/32
@opensaysmani
I mean he probably has a butler & cave hideout. We've all seen his Batmobile (Cybertruck) and Emergency light (X light ontop of HQ)

30/32
@dbasch
I don't think Elon cares much about what people in the UK (or Argentina or Nigeria for that matter) think of him. Honest question, why should he? His personal brand is to polarize people by inspiring either intense fanatism or strong disliking.

31/32
@DogeMarineP
And why is he tweeting away about your country Paul? Anything important? Perhaps more important than a "personal brand"? Your way of thinking is part of the problem.

It's like a redditor, 'oh my god Elon keeps posting about things but its like he's just ruining his image.' meanwhile the posts "mass r*pe that is currently ongoing needs to end"

32/32
@CynicalActuary
No, Paul, the constant dishonest smear barrage from British media is the reason he is vehemently disliked.

Elon Musk bet me $1 million the U.S. would not see 35,000 cases of Covid—then turned on me when it happened, says Sam Harris

  • Podcaster Sam Harris claims his friendship with Elon Musk ended after a $1 million COVID-19 bet over U.S. case numbers.

Podcaster and neuroscientist Sam Harris claims Elon Musk once bet him $1 million that the U.S. wouldn’t see more than 35,000 cases of COVID-19.

In an explosive Substack post titled “The Trouble With Elon Musk,” Harris detailed his fallout with his former friend, publishing texts exchanged during the coronavirus pandemic’s early days.

He cites one incident where the Tesla CEO bet him $1 million against a $1,000 bottle of tequila that the U.S. wouldn’t see as many as 35,000 cases of COVID-19.

Harris said he tried to up the bet to 3.5 million cases of COVID-19 at the time, but Musk accused him of “having lost [his] mind” and insisted on sticking with 35,000 cases.

After the CDC reported 35,000 deaths from COVID-19 a few weeks later, Harris said he texted Musk: “Is (35,000 deaths + 600,000 cases) > 35,000 cases?”

The text went unanswered, according to Harris, who cites the message as the end of their years-long friendship.

“Let this be a cautionary tale for any of Elon’s friends who might be tempted to tell the great man something he doesn’t want to hear,” Harris said in the post.

Musk publicly criticized the early concerns surrounding COVID-19 in 2020, stating in an X post, “The coronavirus panic is dumb.”

As the pandemic spread, he became increasingly skeptical of COVID-19 vaccines and also attacked former chief medical advisor to the President of the United States, Anthony Fauci, who oversaw the country’s response to the pandemic.

In December 2022, Musk called for Fauci’s prosecution, posting on X: “My pronouns are Prosecute/Fauci.”

Representatives for Musk did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Fortune.

Harris and Musk: Friends to Foes

Harris and Musk were friends for years before the alleged fallout.

In his Substack post, Harris said he knew Musk in 2008 when Tesla was struggling to make payroll, and Musk was “living off loans from his friends Larry [Page] and Sergey [Brin].”

He praised Musk as a remarkable person who was “probably the most likely to remain a world-historical figure” but also “the most likely to squander his ample opportunities to live a happy life, ruin his reputation and most important relationships, and produce lasting harm across the globe.”

Over the past few years, the two have traded public barbs.

Musk has attacked Harris on X, calling him “mentally ill” and “an utter idiot.” Harris has called the billionaire a bully and alleged his former pal is addicted to social media.

In an episode of “The Bulwark” podcast released in November last year, Harris said the billionaire was “snorting ketamine and tweeting at all hours of the day and night.”

Harris criticized Musk’s social media use again in the recent post.

“Any dispassionate observer of Elon’s behavior on Twitter/X can see that there is something seriously wrong with his moral compass, if not his perception of reality,” he said.
