Since it looks like no signs of anything, maybe they got into it? Some emotional stress, Hackman clutches chest and goes out, wife is overcome with guilt and clocks out via overdose. Maybe the dog ate some after it spilled out?

I don’t like to say it out loud, but being old isn’t a good feeling. It’s harder on the body to survive each new day, not to mention the mental distress from not being able to do the things you used to do independently. I can definitely understand somebody wanting to go out on their own terms.
