They did allude to it. There's one scene where Pycelle jumps out of bed, does a couple stretches, then returns to his hobble before leaving the privacy of his chambers. There's so much subtly to this show that a lot is easy to miss.

I thought it was gonna tie into a larger storyline about him working for someone else secretly and to some secret plot

the explanation they gave in that deleted scene didn't make sense at all

made perfect sense.. he played frail and timid so people would go easy on him

remember he was there for all the kings... mad king, robert, and all the lannister kids.. nobody ever questioned him or thought to throw him out. even when he made mistakes it was "oh he's a old weak man"


it's like when you play dumb so smart people will let their guard down around you.. tell you things they think your dumb ass won't understand. start giving you a little extra help or credit cause you not smart as them... meanwhile you smarter than all of them and just playing the role to get ahead
