why not ? i think you'd enjoy it, im on my 4th read thru and honestly its better than my first 3

the books might sound intimidating because of how large they each are but honestly the books are so good you dont even realize how fast you're reading thru pages

I have no interest in starting another series that will most likely never be finished. I got suckered into starting "The Art Trilogy" by Clive Barker back in 1990....the second book came out in 1994....and the 3rd book is nowhere to be seen, 20+ years later.

He isn't lazy or content with money or anything like that. Theories like that are based on pure conjecture.

He's just lost some control of the story as the world has expanded. Plus he's always underestimated how long he'd take to finish individual books or how many books it'd take to finish the series. Even before the TV show blew up.

Be frustrated or annoyed if you want, but blaming laziness is stupid when none of us know his effort level.

I think his effort level was illustrated just fine by his blogs on what shows he's currently binge watching.

The guy is pushing 70 and has at least 2 more books to write, each of which is probably close to 1000 pages. He doesn't have the luxury of "losing control of the story". Now he's doing another TV show. At some point you have to entertain the thought that he'll never finish what he started.

Plenty of television showrunners tweet constantly about mundane shyt. That's hardly evidence of laziness. Shonda Rhimes tweeted the other day she binged watched 7 hours of Empire in one day and she's got like 3 shows on ABC, is she lazy as well?

I'm not defending the guy for not having the books done. He knew that was a risk when he took the cash and now he'll have to live with it. I'm just saying it's much more likely that they aren't done because he is struggling with tying the growing amount of plot threads together, not because of some lack of effort or loss of interest or contentment with making money off the show. Again, the first big gap in between book release was 2000-2005 (books 3 and 4). The show didn't go into production until 2007.

Personally I think that he'll get out 2 more books before he dies but there's no way he finishes the series in 7. He'd need at least 8 and probably 9 to wrap it all up.

That's a terrible comparison. Shonda Rhimes has overseen 4 separate TV series in the time it's taking G.R.R. Martin to write a single book.

Also she's a show runner. He's an author. Her main focus is TV. His main focus is the books. Let's put it like this, would you rather hear his opinion on the last season of "Homeland", or have him actually write? He attended the Emmys and they handed him a typewriter during it because he should've been writing:

Lastly, if he's still committed to finishing his books, why does this thread exist? "I'm having trouble tying all these plot lines together in the actual books people are waiting for, but let me go work on another TV show." :dwillhuh:

he never gonna finish the books :shaq2:
I may never finish the books either.
Read all 900 pages of book one and that took me like all of 2014 plus jan and feb of this year.
I have book two, but I haven't even started it yet.

The books are very good but they are incredibly long as well. I almost don't even want to start the next one...
I've got like 20 Piers Anthony books I still need to read... so I'm not gonna be caught up anytime soon.

Hopefully he doesn't croak or rush the ending.

It’s not a terrible comparison at all. Shonda Rhimes can binge watch shows and still work her ass off. Therefore it’s possible for GRRM to watch shows and still work his ass off. The only difference is that his hard work hasn’t translated to him putting material out. But that doesn’t mean he isn’t putting in work writing.

Why is it so hard to believe that he’s been putting in work and effort but is just struggling to turn that into good readable material? Why do we assume that the guy who conjured up this massive world with different religions, and cultures and languages and animals suddenly turned lazy? Instead of the more logical conclusion that as the world and story got bigger he had a tougher time juggling all the story lines it all at the same time.

He put out books 1-3 in short order, then book 4 drastically expanded in scope and lo and behold he took longer to put it out. This was all before the show existed or he was a huge celebrity. Book 5 expanded the scope even more and yet again he took even longer.

You said earlier that you haven’t read the books, so I’m assuming you’re unfamiliar with his original plan for the 5 year gap? I won’t go into detail because of spoilers but when writing for book 4 he wrote for a year straight and ended up throwing it all away because his original 5 year gap wouldn’t have worked and he had to start from scratch. A years worth of writing thrown in the garbage is a sign of writer that is struggling with his story, not a lazy one.
