I do find myself rooting for individuals or their story over the flag..It is what it is...

Many people dont care for the country they represent but want to represent their people. As in they dont care for the government who sent them there but do it to represent their peoples back home.
I enjoy watching the chinese compete tho. They come through like they have a chip on their shoulder.
The african nations usually only do well in sports that dont require a lot of equipment like running and soccer but I applaud them for even showing up to compete in Canoeing and other sports like that that were previously dominated by europeans. If they had the infrastructure and the funds for equipment to be available to more people there is no doubt in my mind they would do much better.
Latin american are historically good at soccer, tennis and volleyball but they have been making strides in other sports too. I cant always root for them because they are already so diverse in their sports.

And as cliche as it sounds, I honestly feel like a "citizen of the world"..But most Americans are seperatists.. It's the same mentality that causes some to shed tears for months after 9/11, but not bat an eye when thousands are killed in Syria..We have a inflated value of ourselves at times..
The funny thing is lately I've been hearing white Americans be critical of Black pride (in cases of Gabby and Serena), while not realizing it's the same mentality that causes them to be proud of being American...

I personally like to think of myself as a citizen of the world. Sure you have specific countries where you have roots and then the one where you rest your head (USA in my case) but overall when you are somewhere with a lot of diversity and many people from various corners of the world just enjoying themselves together you cant help but think wether the idea of "countries" and "borders" is just separating us all from each other.
