A truly good therapist is rare af. Some therapists literally make your condition worse.
Facts.

Had this wench therapist in college tell me to take up “horseback” riding for my depression

With a fukking smurk on her face :mjpls:

Bytch gave me the most basic cookie cutter advice, with absolutely zero empathy for my situation. Did the absolute bare minimum - gave me a fukking pamphlet on different drugs to take.

I shoulda walked out then and there.

She did some further :mjpls: shyt too like making me wait a long ass time and cancelling my appointments.

Yet I show up 1 minute late one day after I struggled to get out of bed and the c00n bytch told me to reschedule :pacspit:

if you are a black man you need a black male therapist first off

second you need to vet your therapist. i think they all give 1 free session. If you dont like the therapist find a new one. Also if you arent taking it serious and opening up you wasting your time

plus therapy is only one part of getting better. you also need to take up exercising even better if you can afford a martial art to learn a skill while building comradery with your class mates, get toxic women and friends out your life, minimize your alcohol and drug use, lastly u need to find a purpose or something to strive for that gets you out of bed. IDGAF if its drawing sketches. You just need goals and structure in your life. Do all of this and i guarantee your mental health will improve. One day u will wake up sick and tire of being sick and tired hopefully

This thread is great and hopefully I can help some people with finding more supports. I didn’t sleep at a Holiday in Express, but I am a practicing therapist and have a Ph.D. In Psychology.

I am a super advocate of therapy for everyone-especially Black people who are exposed to so much trauma on a daily basis, and trauma reactivity is literally written into our genes and passed down. A lot of behavior is neurobiological based and are not a matter of will or desire. Trauma has a lot of automatic physical exactions that can be predicted and expected- and thus ameliorated through specific means.

Therapy is one of the few places where there is a space for us to explore who we have been, what was done to us, who we are, and who we want to be without judgement and only your betterment in mind.

Therapy is a space where the connection between biology, internal processing, cognition, and the social are all conceptualized as working together to hurt or heal us. There are different ways to go about achieving this. Here are some questions to ask

What is their theoretical orientation- what theories of human development and skills do they think underpin problems and underpin how we heal?

How long have they been a therapist and what populations- you want to see the range of what they have experienced, will they overreact to some things or be scared or even unable to recognize what is going on?

What is their experience with Blacks and our many groups- we are not a are their views on medication and holistic options- you want to know will they just pill push or even dismiss your notions of healing, e.g. traditional methods that work for our people.

Are they active therapists who engage, tell you what is going on in therapy, do psychological education, give homework or do they let a process happen slowly and focus more on your insight.

Will they make explicit connections and teach you about your neurobiology and how it interacts with your environments? And will they teach skills, and help assess our strengths, supports, and vulnerabilities, while giving us skills and opportunities to practice these skills for coping and improving in therapy and the real world.

hope this heps

I feel like you aint telling the complete details about the session. if you can't be open on an anonymous forum you probably dont do it with your therapist either so it probably is pointless in that case
What details do you think im leaving out? I told the woman i was molested and she said nothing but a head nod.

yall nikkas on here love being contradictory and unhelpful just to be contrarian. the fukk on somewhere if youre not gonna help

Best therapist I ever had was a middle age white dude.

He taught me how to ask questions to myself to get to the answer I needed. Regardless on how I felt about it of course.

But those techniques kept me alive until I truly ready to face my demons.

I say this because you never know who could help, so keep your options open.

Living a life with purpose eludes many many people these days, but I can say that you are on the right track. Keep looking, there are plenty of therapists.

Could also try coaching, little different than therapy.

Congrats on being sober broski. Hopefully you proud of that.
