IDK what to look for in a therapist

i wanted a black woman because thats who i feel would be more comfortable, but should i be out of my comfort zone?

My best therapist was a cac woman, but she was an extremely rare case. She was definitely the type who understood Black issues (to the extent that a white woman could). I had a Black psychiatrist at that same clinic. Those two together probably helped save my life, along with my ol' lady.

My WORST therapists were all white men :pacspit:

But thats the thing though, thats what i thought we were gonna do.

I laid my problems out and whats been bothering me and all i got was "mhm, you shouldnt do that. look up some stress management and coping techniques on youtube. Are you free next friday?"

Im ready to process this shyt, but nothing happened

That's why I said talk therapy has it's limits which apply to traditional psychology as a whole.

Next time you link up with her tell her the same shyt you said in the OP, ask her if she's familiar with EDMR therapy techniques.

It's actually pretty easy to do on your own but where you'd need some support is in the processing negative thoughts and feelings that come up as you make changes.

Follow that ball for a little bit, see how you feel.

My psychiatrist told me i need to see a therapist not just take meds

i just got done with a black woman(i specifically wanted one) therapist and this bytch only told me to go look up stress management on youtube

My whole fukking day is gone and now im more upset than when i left home. is this normal for therapy? :skip:

At what point in the session did she tell you to look up stress management on YouTube? Was she asking you to look up videos to have something to discuss during your next session? What was the context?

So a psychiatrist told you to go so a therapist who told you to go on youtube?:mjlol::mjlol:

She's right about suggesting stress management and coping skills, you need those to get out of the mental health danger zones, but ideally she should be teaching said skills, not referring you to youtube videos.

That doesn't sound like the most productive session. It's unfortunate. That said, YouTube can be a great resource and the links that the poster gave above seem like they could be really helpful.

Also, if you have another session with her you might want to consider communicating your expectations and desires to agree upon mutual goals. That is, of course, assuming you haven't already done so. If you've already communicated your needs and expectations then you might have to consider another person if things don't get better.

One of my best friends was my therapist, old white Vietnam vet with bomb fragments in his arm. He ain't follow no CBT play book, he was just present with me, taught me how to see shyt differently, hipped me to a lot of concepts that put me on a path of self mastery and service.

And we barely did any of the clinical head shrink shyt. We played chess, we chopped it up about everything besides my problems and eventually useful things made their way into our conversations. Not to say your therapist has to be your friend to be effective, just saying be open to possibility, shop around for someone who will actually be present with you, black or otherwise.
