My psychiatrist told me i need to see a therapist not just take meds

i just got done with a black woman(i specifically wanted one) therapist and this bytch only told me to go look up stress management on youtube

My whole fukking day is gone and now im more upset than when i left home. is this normal for therapy? :skip:

It can be actually.

Things can get worse before they get better, I don't want to say that they HAVE to but that is often the case.

Talk therapy has it's limits but when done correctly, you aren't going to just mentally reference whatever trauma or issue...you're actually going to process them, work through the effects they have had on your nervous system, and sometimes that doesn't feel great.

Don't take that as a sign that it isn't working or that you should stop. Take the hit, take a break, process what feels different and keep moving forward at a comfortable pace.

But thats the thing though, thats what i thought we were gonna do.

I laid my problems out and whats been bothering me and all i got was "mhm, you shouldnt do that. look up some stress management and coping techniques on youtube. Are you free next friday?"

Im ready to process this shyt, but nothing happened

IDK what to look for in a therapist

i wanted a black woman because thats who i feel would be more comfortable, but should i be out of my comfort zone?

PhD level therapists generally have more training with talk therapy that a MD psychiatrist. It’s going to take consistency with weekly visits to make ground processing the source of your behaviors.

If you’re looking for practical ways to manage stress, look for a therapist who has experience in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy - this should give you concrete methods to manage stress like thought blocking, thought replacement, and others.
