Yea in a certain age range Jay was never really the top dog......I was a huge RR fan and DMX outshined him every time......then EM got him......later on it was Wayne.......

I really don't remember a time when Jay was the 1......
When the Blueprint was released in 2001, do you feel Eminem was ahead of Jay-z?
I would argue Eminem didn't become the top dog in Hip Hop until Lose Yourself in 2002, even though he was the bigger pop star.

2001 was Jays year.

Blueprint was one of the top selling and critically acclaimed albums while changing the production sound on east coast rap.

Which is why most major publications will list it ahead of reasonable doubt

Jay is the LeBron of rap
  • Maybe not the absolute GOAT by consensus,
  • But damn near always in the convo,
  • Played the long game,
  • Built an empire,
  • Has “rings” (classics),
  • And outlasted most of his peers.

perfect breakdown

Because Eminem "renegaded" him on that very album.

At that time I wasn't paying attention to things the coli does....like record sales...and all these other metrics.....

Slim shadey LP was out prior and so did Marshall Mathers LP. he was lyrically off the meat rack.

I just wasn't going crazy anticipating HOVA verses at the time.

Like I said; I only remembered Jay as being a #2 and stated the artists.

I wasn't old enough to remember reasonable doubt in real time; but I would assume Biggie was still #1 when that shyt dropped.

I hear you. Em was lyrically incredible and the Slim Shady persona was still fresh at that time. I would still argue that 2001 was Jay's year as top dawg though.

Marshall :hubie: Eminem will always be Top 5 because of this era. Outside of nas he was the closest to being the perfect rapper.

Crazy how losing the bass brothers fukked up his sound.

Output just been so bad since then :snoop: One reason Jay is above him all time now

Why did he lose Bass Brothers, what happened?
