Kerry married into money (his wife is the heir to the Heinz ketchup fortune).
But I'll never understand why people spend millions of their own money for a job that pays $170K.
The lure of power is amazing :beli:
The smart ones are involved with insider trading. They vote on issues that affect the markets and profit accordingly.

What do they do that makes that much money?
These people are in charge of passing legislation that benefits certain industries.

Imagine you're some middle class senator from bumfukk Iowa. Aside from being a senator from potato country, you also own maybe $10,000 worth of shares in some obscure company that designs unmanned drones. Next thing you know, our country gets into a long term conflict in the Middle East, and now that little drone company you invested in is worth a billion dollars. Overnight you went from $10,000 to a milly in shares.

A lot of these senators go back to private practice when their career is over. Some of them go into the pharmaceutical industry, medical industry, defense industry, biotech/agriculture/corporate farming industry etc. All these industries they helped by passing laws that allowed them to expand their business in America.

Be a poor person, sell drugs, get caught and serve 15 years. Be a congressman, get immunity, do insider trading and demonize minorities.

This is my theory...in my mind after about 20-30 million, money is irrelevant its all about power.

Ever watched House of Cards? Well the main character congressman Francis Underwood had a great quote on that

Francis Underwood said:
"Such a waste of talent. He chose money over power - in this town, a mistake nearly everyone makes. Money is the Mc-mansion in Sarasota that starts falling apart after 10 years. Power is the old stone building that stands for centuries"

This is common knowledge....they almost always have money behind them but they're often upper middle class people.

That's why some people think there should be term limits, less time for people to forget who they were. Most people in Congress are egomaniacs though, I definitely gathered that much from my time around them. I'm trying to remember who was the one Senator people told me was still contesting a B he received at Harvard Law because he had never received a B in his life and doesn't believe one should ever be on his transcript.

The people will ideas and who are genuine are seldom the people you hear, it's all about who can raise the most money.

Yep. All elections should be subsidized, NO PRIVATE DONATIONS, and have term limits. Nikkaz still in Congress that was elected in the 60s :stopitslime:
