The show was funny from the beginning. But I agree that it didn't reach that higher level until Carlton became a more comedic character.

I think they all did what they were supposed to do. The only forgettable characters were the new Vivian, Ashley and Nicki
People forget Alphonso Reibero was a child actor with broadway, commercial, and tv work under his belt YEARS before he was cast on Fresh Prince. Will was a first time actor who was basically getting by on an IMMENSE level of charm and charisma the first two seasons.
Will worked really hard to become better and by the time the fourth season came about he was probably the second best pure actor behind James Avery (he got a LOT of acting chops and techniques from starring in Six Degrees Of Separation)

That was a product of his dedication even early on though

Yeah he had star power so crazy. We take it for granted today but Will Smith is a different level when it comes to stars. Him and Jordan most popular Black men till Obama came around, he's probably one of the few that white folks "don't see race with".
