All four of your grandparents have to be from the same country in Africa (but not the same ethnic group). One per household. They only chose 12 countries. If you're from outside of these countries but have ancestry from a people that reside in one of the 12, lie, and change it when you get your results/account set up or clarify to matches when asked. :ld:

They're building a database to help African Americans (from the Americas) and Caribbean folks pin point our ancestry. You get all the same features and benefits as paying members of the site..health information, all of that. Please pass this information along.

Thanks

They already did a huge kit giveaway for African people, in general (meaning, any type of African), now they're offering kits specifically to those from several countries from where many of our ancestors were taken.

They want specifically "Continental" Africans now because, as they've done for European ancestry, they're building a database of people from these different countries to use to give us a break down of the various regions that we come from. It could tell you something like 30% Ghana, 5% Guinea,5% Benin/Togo, 15% Senegambia, 25% Nigeria, 20 Congo/Angola in their ancestry breakdown feature called Ancestry Composition.

Additionally, 23andMe has two features one is DNA Relatives and the other is Ancestry Finder (Countries of Origin) the database has thousands of people in it and if you share DNA with a person over 7cm they will appear in your DNA Relatives section and at least 5 cm they will show in Ancestry Finder.

If you share DNA with these individuals you have a common ancestor(s). A 4grandparent match with someone from Africa will give an indication or even reveal where your ancestry is from. This is why they're not offering these kits to everyone with African ancestry this time.

word i still have my free kit from a couple years ago...

:patrice: not sure how I felt contributing to their research....

it's probably benign enough, i'm guessing they're just attempting to map where modern day humans are from. and Africans are a under-represented demographic in their research. so they said fukk it and gave the kits out for free.

In the end they will sell that information to companies for a profit though, so it's actually not a loss for them. Again just a guess :yeshrug:
