Roach: Golovkin Must Raise PPV Numbers To Get Cotto

Posted by: Miguel Rivera on 11/11/2015 .

By Miguel Rivera

Freddie Roach, trainer of WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs), is not impressed with the pay-per-view numbers of IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs).

Golovkin made his pay-per-view debut last month in a title unification against David Lemuiex at Madison Square Garden in New York City. There was a lot of promotion by HBO. The figure of 150,000 pay-per-view purchases created a very mixed reaction in the boxing industry. Many saw the figure as a disappointment and others felt it was a respectable figure for a pay-per-view debut.

Cotto returns on November 21st at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, where he defends his world title against Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.

The World Boxing Council has ordered the Cotto-Canelo winner to face Golovkin in a mandatory defense.

Roach actually spoke with Golovkin's trainer, Abel Sanchez, and told him that a Cotto-Golovkin fight would happen when GGG was able to raise his profile and his pay-per-view figures.

"[The fight] is possible. However, I have to say that some time ago in Santa Fe Springs I met Abel Sanchez and we discussed the possibility of a Cotto-Golovkin fight. He said to me, 'Well you have the last word to give the okay on that fight. And I said, if you manage to raise your numbers to make a good pay per view - it can be done," Roach told Rigo Cervantez.

"Because the reality is this, GGG is not that well known in the United States. He is a great fighter, I have no doubt about that and certainly it would be very difficult fight for Miguel. But for me, I like challenges and I would love that fight to happen."

Based on their catch-weight demands alone, it's doesn't appear likely that Golovkin was going to face Cotto or Canelo in the first half of 2016.

If the winner refuses to fight Golovkin next, the belt will become vacant and the WBC will name Golovkin, who has the interim-belt, as their full champion.

Roach: Golovkin Must Raise PPV Numbers To Get Cotto

So, it seems that both Cotto and Canelo are willing to vacate the WBC Middleweight Championship rather than be forced to fight the non-PPV draw GGG at the full limit.....just as we all knew:ahh:

GGG better get ready to make 155.15 or :camby: with his dreams of cashing in on a huge payday against 2 Junior Middleweights masquerading as Middleweights on November 21st:russ:

Oh....and GGG can have the vacant WBC belt as a parting gift, since he's not chasing a payday and just wants the belts to unify:smugbiden:

I remember GGG's camp said this in reference to SOG.......and people were laughing, agreeing with it, and accepted it:mjpls:

Seems to me that RNS remembers that and told Freddie Roach exactly what to say, now let's see if that's still acceptable:smugbiden:

Ether. Genuinely. :wow: :francis:

Oh well he'll just have to forfeit that belt if he retains so we can collect it :blessed:

That's what GGG wants...to have all the belts. Supposedly, it doesn't matter if it comes from beating Miguel Cotto, Canelo Alvarez, or Michael Soro. As long as he's unified the division is all that matter to him.

At least that's what they've told us:mjpls:

Let's see if this is true:myman:

What about Mexican style doesn't that sell PPVs? :heh:

What if Cotto wants to sell all the t shirts he's ever made? 97G could help him with that :mjlol:

If things go south he can always fight Lara in Kazakhstan, maybe that'd turn him into 165g

Team Cotto y'all. Went for the title vs. Martinez, which was a good move; it was a good matchup and he knew Martinez was still hurt and he could win the fight. Then he fought Geale defending the belt. I don't blame Geale for the catchweight. After losing to GGG taking the Cotto fight was the only way to get back on American TV, a belt shot, and a quality payday; otherwise he would have been fighting in Europe or Australia putting things back together.

Now in his second defense Cotto picks Canelo, who isn't a MW yet for a defense. Word was Canelo wanted the catchweight, but didn't care about the belt, it was Cotto who wanted to get a title defense.

I said after beating Martinez if Cotto wanted to defend the belt I would give him a couple fights at 160 to get acclimated before he should be expected to fight GGG, since at the time (and currently) is viewed as the best fighter at 160.

If he wins this will be two defenses. He and Canelo just paid GGG high six figures to step aside. If he doesn't look to fight GGG next it shows his 160 title defenses were a charade. Willing to fight another true and quality 160 pounder, but not GGG...wanting a 155 lb fighter to fight for the title...don't want to fight the other main star at 160, hmmmm.

Forget the GGG needs more popularity talk. Cotto's team knows damn well the only fights he can get that are bigger than GGG is a Canelo, Mayweather, or Pacquiao rematch...and maybe Khan. There is know one else at 154 or 160 that does GGG numbers. Hell even Cotto-Bradley wouldn't be as big as Cotto-GGG.

Which is it Cotto? Want the glory of that extra division championship and defenses on your HOF resume...your 160 accomplishments don't mean much until you fight GGG.
