I think he did a good job with the album, i really didn't like the 1st single but in the context of the album i can see what he was trying to do, he was never an artist foreign to doing trap stuff and different styles, Being listening to his music since 2010, when Madlib came to the table later for producing his stuff he compared it to "Trying to solve a puzzle and fit the pieces and find the pockets, said it challenged and improved him as a rapper i have always admired his versatility. The roll out promo for "$oul $old $eparately" has being great, from the visuals, video promos, to the merch, to the anticipation, to visual creativity in general, the album starts off very Cinematic and soulful with "Couldn't Be Done", in terms of direction on the album, I feel like with the 3 trap tracks and the fun track with DJ Paul, he was trying to give diversity, along with the more serious cuts
Gibbs has always being an artist, you can't put in a box and I always admired his versatility, he does play more to his strengths on tracks such as Space Rabbit, CIA, Blackest In The Room, where hes just showing them technical skills, he also gives the listener those records with much more deep lyrics, where he shines even more, such as on Rabbit Vision, Dark Hearted & Grandmas Stove , where he shows growth and honesty, particularly on "Grandmas Stove" & "Rabbit Vision", "Dark Hearted" wasn't my favorite production style but his vulnerability and melody on that song has stuck with me, with more listens,
Also on the album you also get the 2 Mafioso tracks of "Gold Rings" & Lobster Omelette, as far as the trap stuff, Zipper Bagz, is clearly the more accessible of them for us heads getting up close to 40 lol, "Pain & Strife" is probably one of the weaker tracks but i do like the Bone Thugs Homage, so its modern and still got that going for it, it's similar to "Situations" off Bandana, just less bouncy, I really don't like "Too Much", the beat is a little too busy and repetitive for me but on the album and not a standout single, its less painful to listen to, the record label gonna love him for the song and its one for younger fans to get into his music tho, PVS is definitely one that has a late nightclub feel and energy to it, I wish "Black Illuminati" made it on there but i can see he was trying to cover all bases, he already had 3 gritty tracks in "Gold Rings", Lobster Omelette & "Feel No Pain" if you discount the sunny hook from Anderson Paak,
Some of the weaker cuts do mess with the cohesion a little bit but i think its quite an ambitious and good album from Freddie Gibbs, I don't think lyrically its him at his highest level and the production is a little too eclectic in parts but their is no denying this man can rap and he didn't just toss this album together like some Artists, who just give you a date and toss you it, it has a buffet of moods on the album, from Fun, serious, simplistic to uncomfortably vulnerable, to loose to straight up raw, I think the album will do its part to him reaching more People and won't annoy a lot of his long time fans, its a little different from an artist choosing to do Trap Music, he has many suits and sides to him as an artist, think he enjoyed the process and change of scenery, from a one MC and One producer formula.
