If there was a channel 3 in your area with a strong signal (I'm talkin about the antenna) it could cause interference on channel 3. So you had channel 4 for an alternate.

It aint about being in the boonies. Its anywhere that has a channel 3 TV station. Theres one in Sacramento so back in the day they probably had issues there. I grew up around a channel 4 station so 3 always looked better for me.
