If people would've asked this shyt
in the 60's we wouldn't have the integrated circuit
right now.
The better question is WHY NOT !?
At this time it seems like the money can be used for better reasons. Just a thought.

We can fund the technology of tomorrow TODAY and benefit
massively from it.
So much comes from funding the sciences that it would
be stupid to not consider, with space exploration being just
one thing that could use all of that cash.
Put it like this, you wouldn't be on the internet right now
had the government not funded projects like space exploration.
We'd still have poorly performing hard to maintain computers
that fill several floors of one building.
What better reason is there ?
For fukks sake we're spending 10 million dollars an hour over in Afghanistan :

http://theweek.com/article/index/241464/the-cost-of-the-iraq-war-190000-lives-22-trillion
http://www.globalresearch.ca/more-than-50-of-us-government-spending-goes-to-the-military/18852

But then turn around and cut the jobs of people actually doing something worth while :

It just leaves my :mindblown: that anyone, I mean ANYONE would argue against
this. :snoop:

i'm curious to understand what you define as better reasons? her thoughts didn't make me feel like some major outreach for funding on immediate groundbreaking ...more like a gauntlet thrown down to excite thought and next steps into making her goal become an eventual reality

its never too early to start investing in tomorrows.....do you not have a 401k for instance?

I've had a 401k since I was 19. I understand where your coming from. I don't think what she's saying isn't important or doesn't deserve the enthusiasm. I just think the same kind of effort could be used for shyt on earth. Trying to end world hunger, An end to 3rd world type poverty, An end to illiteracy. Why are things like that pushed to the side as impossible but going on a 100 year trip in space is good to go because we will get more gadgets from the research. I just think we should focus our attention on earth now.

I also understand your position, however I believe the issues you posted have nothing to do with research and development dealing with "shyt not on earth"

Take yourself for instance...i assume you're a fully functioning adult in america that goes to work and pays your taxes and manages your personal life. Now say you have a old injury that's flared up, a toothache, a bill that due tomorrow, and your kid needs a new backpack. Each of these "issues" are not related but don't you get them all handled? You go to the doc about the old injury or maybe take some meds, you call your dentist and make an appointment, you set up your e-bill pay, and you take the little one to walmart and let them pick our their new backpack.

My point is that the world and its innovators, scientists, engineers, explorers, inventors, philosophers etc etc are more than capable of undertaking more than one project at a time, to include human space exploration and continued efforts to eradicate hunger, poverty, illiteracy, and the host of other issues that plague the world ....and to think otherwise is a bit silly (not a personal barb btw)

:salute: this sista.

She is right though, with the leaps of technology could you imagine the progress we would make as a civilization if we made further efforts to explore and potentially colonize space. My oldest son has a girlfriend who is trying to get a masters degree in environmental engineering and is studying theories of sustainability in harsh enviroments and the like. I wanna see terraforming on Mars by 2050.
