It was an incredible album and honestly...really important at the time. If you were in HS at the time this was really refreshing. This and black on both sides were formative albums for a lot of us.

I was a sophomore in HS, in the south. My sister’s future husband used to play this all the time. My brother and I used to have a copy, everybody in school was randomly singing out “KweeeeLllliiiii!” In people’s faces lol.

There were some really cool albums that year that I still listen to. This, Electric Circus, From the roota to tha toota, Gangsta and a Gentleman, Come Home with me, the fix, Lord Willin’, lost tapes, God’s Son, BP2, Cee-Lo’s debut, Guess Who’s back, The true Meaning, Phrenology, etc.

Not a year packed with timeless classics, but there were some good albums and very strong singles. A lot of us cherish this album, but I can kind of understand how it was kind of got lost to the memory of the casual listener.

How could you not give this album 5 mics?

It was both behind and ahead of its time. If it came out in 2000-2001 or 2005 I feel like it would have stuck with a lot more casual listeners. A lot of what was “hot” in 2002 was meant for clubs or was full of half baked super gangster punchlines. This kind of music got pushed to the side, and sometimes clowned, by people who weren’t looking for it. It was a godsend for people who listened to rhymes and production with depth, or enjoyed some of everything.
