Tyrese Gibson Should Not Be Warner Bros.' New Green Lantern

Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely think the next big screen Green Lantern should be the first black DC Comics superhero, John Stewart. Hal Jordan – by way of Ryan Reynolds – had his chance in the abysmal Green Lantern movie from 2011 and he blew it. Furthermore, DC superhero movies (and superhero movies in general (and movies in general (and entertainment in general))) absolutely need more diversity both in front of and behind the camera, and utilizing a character like Stewart is just such an obvious way to do it.

But Tyrese Gibson is not the right guy for the job.

Recently, Tyrese posted a fan-created image featuring himself as John Stewart/Green Lantern. He’s been hinting via social media for a while that he’d like to play the character – it’s the Vin Diesel method of campaigning for a role by leveraging one’s fanbase – and it seems to have worked insofar as he was able to get a meeting with Warner Bros. “I’ve been a fan of the Green Lantern,” Tyrese told Entertainment Tonight. “I took the oath, and I had a meeting at Warner Bros. and certain things were said and talked about. We’ll just see what happens.

Of course, a meeting is just a meeting. Maybe the Green Lantern social media stunt got Tyrese in the door and they just talked about working together generally. After all, Vin Diesel initially campaigned for the role of Vision in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but he was ultimately cast as the living tree Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy. As Tyrese told ET, he has plenty of “fans” and “ box office receipts behind him,” so he’d definitely be a valuable addition to the DC Cinematic Universe. Just…not as John Stewart, not in my opinion.

I say that as a fan of Tyrese as an actor! I think he has a real charm and presence about him. He’s funny, he’s good-looking, he’s cool. I’ve enjoyed his performances in the Fast & Furious movies. I even enjoyed his work in things like Transformers – which I did not like – and Four Brothers – which I thought was just okay. Having said that, what Tyrese is good at – or at least what he’s leaned heavily on as an actor in the past – has been flashy, braggy, over-the-top humor. When I think of John Stewart, I think of confident and cool, but not arrogant, and about as serious and understated as a superhero can get. He’s a no-nonsense kind of guy. He doesn’t crack wise and he doesn’t show off. He’s basically the antithesis of Roman from Furious 7.

Does that mean I think that Tyrese can only play Roman-like roles? Of course not. But if Warner Bros. does cast Tyrese as John Stewart/Green Lantern, I confess I’ll be profoundly concerned that they’ve decided to turn that character into the DCCU’s comic relief. That’s absolutely not who John Stewart is as a Green Lantern. That said, it wouldn’t be the first time Warner Bros. tried to turn a Green Lantern character into a source of humor. They did the same with Ryan Reynolds’ Hal Jordan in a blatant attempt at aping Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man. That was a big mistake as well, but I think doing it to John Stewart would be even worse. After all, we’re talking about one of the most important black superheroes ever. Get it right, people.

Who do I think would be an excellent choice for John Stewart? I know it’s a cliche at this point to say “Idris Elba should play [insert character],” but man, he would be so good in that role. I also saw someone mention The Knick star André Holland for John Stewart, and I think that would be really inspired casting. His performance as Dr. Algernon Edwards was one of the most mesmerizing on TV last year, and it’ll be a damn shame if it doesn’t get recognized at the 2015 Emmy Awards.

I’m sure there are a whole lot of black actors, known and unknown, that would do an amazing job playing John Stewart. And who knows? Tyrese – if he gets the job – could totally surprise me and pull off an amazing Stewart portrayal. Like I said, I like him, I think he’s talented, I just don’t want to see John Stewart being hilarious.

"Open letter to the misinformed writer at Forbes!

Amazing that you would jump out there and write a story and make a complete fool of yourself like this.... I guess the concept of "Perception vs Reality" has just sat in - in a real embarrassing way- playing a "role" is doing just that... Playing a role....

Do your research I was at home innocent it's the FANS who started the "Tyrese Green Lantern Campaign" so again do your research bro...NOT just write a whole article based on movies that I've done that in your mind are "popular"... All dramatic roles...
Baby Boy? Four Brothers,? Waist Deep..? Black Nativity.? Annapolis? I've actually done more dramatic roles and movies then anything comedic - or charming- I'm an entertainer and were supposed to be use to people writing random blogs and stories - that's fine.... Know your facts, and DO your research before your press that UPLOAD button... Especially on Forbes champ!! Enjoy the rest of your weekend - I've provided your list of movies.... When you do your re-write... Since you decided to typecast me... I would appreciate an apology for writing this misinformed article.... Thanks - Tyrese Gibson"

If Tyrese has been campaigning for the role as hard as it seems then I'd assume he'd be open to not making a caricature of the Black Excellence that is John Stewart and...you know... actually ACTING. Tyrese has a point that as an actor he shouldn't type cast himself and should be confident in his ability to play the character straight.

Still would prefer Idris Elba though...

Dont believe at all this dude was ever up for Stewart.

Unless WB marketing is doing some new thing where they dont keep casting a secret, have the actor clown and pretend to be campaigning for the role, then reveal that they got the role (months ago) and treat it as some sort of fanservice type thing since the actor should have been gaining support for his casting.

But that's even dumber than an actor begging for roles on instagram

Does this discourses even need to be happening? Tyrese doesn't have the role and it doesn't look like its close to being cast, so why even have a back and forth. And I don't want to see any more idris or boseman, let some new blood in.
