Have you ever considered that it may be simply because you're attaching too many meanings to the word?

"That's just someone that I know from (school/work/other)."
"That's just an acquaintance."
etc.


I was just thinking this the other day and had to stop and think for a moment.

Joe-that's my friend if i get in trouble im calling him. i have a problem i'm talking to him about it. we hang go where ever together. etc

John- that's someone I'm cool with. we'll hang sometimes not all the time. we get along we don't have any problems. but if i need some one to talk to about some deep personal stuff i'm not going to go to him i'm going to Joe.
I don't have the same bond with John as I do Joe.
