The high pull is the first pull in a clean and in a snatch, and it is the only explosive part of both lifts. The catch is okay, but IMO it's not worth the wrist trauma. Also, by only doing the high pull, you can focus all your strength on the one explosive movement.

Just sayin :yeshrug:
How much weight are you using when doing high pulls? How many reps are you doing in a set?

That's a good amount of weight. If it works for you, that's good.

For the naysayers, I used to do high pulls as a part of Olympic weight-lifting training. It's not the be-all-end-all exercise. I also did squats, cleans and snatches. If you perform power cleans properly, you get the explosive phase performed at the end of the high pull.
