Every day or so, i'll be posting a profile on unrecognized musicians, today i'll be doing ten: Muslimgauze, Carl Crack, Julius Eastman, Fun-Da-Mental, B L A C K I E, Moranbong, Orange Juice, Herukrat, Gray and Cibo Matto

@Maxine - You might enjoy this,
@Jayne - You too

Part 1 of 2

#01 - Muslimgauze
Repping: Manchester, UK/Wales
Genres: Ethnic Ambient, Electronica, Drone, Noise, Dub, Trip Hop, Illbient, Breakcore
Years active: 1982-1998
Bio:
"Muslimgauze are pro-Arab and anti-Israel, due to the abuse of human rights. Every piece of music is based on a political fact."
-Muslimgauze/Bryn Jones

Muslimgauze was a beast. He made one full length album a week since the early 80's, all of them were instrumentals about the Middle East with a pro-Muslim/Arab slant. I could talk about him for a whole thread, but i'll let his music do the talking (Muslimgauze - Discography (a page from Muslimgauze: The Messenger - The official on-line repository of Muslimgauze information.))

My Five Favorite Albums (out of 200+!)

1. Syrinjia - Heavily influenced by early Jamaican dub, which Bryn was a fan of, described by one reviewer as, "Contractually obligated dance music"

2. Muslimgauze vs The Rootsman - A collab with The Rootsman, a Dub DJ, really trippy and chill album

3. Mullah Said - Four remixes of the title track, Mullah Said, it's very atmospheric and crisp.

4. Fakir Zind - More overtly Ethnic Ambient, this is a pretty good album to start Muslimgauze on.

5. Zuriff Moussa - Heavy trip hop influence on this'un, my go to white noise when I was into lean.

#02 - Carl Crack
Repping: Swaziland/Berlin, Germany
Genres: Noise, Avant-Garde, Breakcore, Ambient
Years active: 80's-2001

The unsung MC of Germany's left-wing electronic group Atari Teenage Riot, Crack was a deeply troubled man with electic music tastes, according to a friend of mine who knew him, he was fukked up all the time, but always tried to self-help with music.

1. Crack with ATR:

2. Crack's only solo album, Black Ark [My number one album of all time]

3. Crack as the vocals of Firewire:

4. Crack as MC Mowgli:

#03 - Fun-Da-Mental
Repping: UK, India, Pakistan, Jamaica, Afrika, The Asiatic Blackman, NOI
Genres: Rock, Rap, Rap Metal, Worldbeat
Years active: 90's

Imagine if Public Enemy and Muslimgauze [Nation of Islam Muslim] had a baby and raised it in London. You got Fun-Da-Mental!

1. President Propaganda [Watch out now we comin' at ya, smash the white propaganda!]

2. Wrath of the Blackman [That Malcolm sample is PIFFFFF]

#04. B L A C K I E
Repping: Houston, Texas
Genres: Noise Rap/U.S. Grime/Thrash-Rap
Years active: 2005-present

He did it before Death Grips, He did it before Kanye. We're friends on facebook, he's a really dedicated musician.

1. Warchild

2. Rapping over the Rhythm and Gash riddim

3. Rapping over Muslimgauze

#05. Moranbong
Repping: North Korea
Genres: K-Pop, Patriotic Music
Years Active: 2010s-Present??

Kim Jong-Un pulled a Dreamgirls and started a K-Pop group, I swear to God. Some members have disappeared, allegedy due to angering Jong-Un's Girlfriend, the de facto director of the group..

1. My country is the best! [That violin is piff, keyboardist looking a lil thick too :shaq:]

2. Let's Study [Here: http://www.naenara.com.kp/en/book/reading.php?12]

Part 2, or, How I have too much time on my hands:

#06: Julius Eastman
Repping: New York
Genres: Minimalism, Neo-Classical
Years Active: 80's

A gay, Black composer. One could imagine all the shyt he went through in upstate New York. Eastman was a visonary who blended popular music with experimental composition, his tracks are erractic, somber and haunting. Sadly, like some of the musicians in this thread, he had a drug problem and passed away in a hospice.

1. Evil Nigg*r [Always makes me cry]

2. Stay On It

#07: Orange Juice
Repping: Scotland
Genres: Post-Punk
Years active: 80s-90's

Unlike most Post-Punk, this group did nothing but depression curing, happy love songs, great for a gloomy day!

1. Wan Light [those horns make me wanna dance like a corny cac!]

2. L.O.V.E.

#08. Herukrat
Repping: Islam, Portland
Genres: HNW, Power Electronics
Years active: 2012-present

Power Electronics is a genre where people yell over noise. This guy just happens to be a very devout Muslim!

#09. Gray
Repping: New York, Art
Genres: No Wave, Punk, Art Rock
Years Active: Mid-80's

Jean-Michel Basquiat had a band!

1. I Wanna Go Back:

2. Suicide Hotline:

#10. Cibo Matto
Repping: Japan, USA
Genres: J-Rap, Trip Hop, Lo-Fi
Years active: 90's-Present

Two Japanese girls who fronted a noise rock band decided to move to New York and rap in English. Fun fact, one of the members was the first VA for Noodle from Gorrilaz [Get the cool, get the cool shoe shine!]. They had Sean Lennon as a member at one point too.

1. Flowers:

2. Moonchild:

Honorable Mentions for the day:

a. Wesley Willis - Schizophrenic brother made profane music to drive away his aural hallucinations who told him to kill himself.

b. The Charmer - Louis Farrakhan used to be a calypso singer.

c. Joan Armatrading - Sadly unnoticed pop singer from the UK.

d. GG Allin - Punk Rocker who beat up his fans, shat on stage, threw said shyt at fans, then would beat up those fans. Covered Joan Armatrading.

e. Big Black - Chicago's only good rock group, these guys were blunt and noisey. Steve Albini, the lead vocalist and guitarist later became a producer who's clients included Nirvana, the Pixies, Page & Plant, and Melt Banana.

My next musicians will all be Japanese noise and pop groups!

Part 3: Hipster trash grab bag

#11. White Noise
Repping: UK, US
Genres: Avant-Garde
Years active: 60's

What happens when three trans-Atlantic hippies end up making early electronica? They end up sounding like Radiohead, before they ran the whole whiny, alternative musician thing to the ground. Out of all the members, Delia Derbyshire had the most post-band success, working as a sound engineer for the BBC.

#12. Pure Hell
Repping: Philadelphia
Genres: Punk, Glam Metal
Years active: 80's-???

These guys influenced the Kings of Afropunk, Bad Brains. Just a few friends who ended up fronting a punk band, they later relocated to London, with little success but ended up playing with Lemmy at one point!

#13. Koufar
Repping: Lebanon, Chicago
Genres: Power Electronics, HNW
Years active: 2010's-present

Imagine the inverse of Muslimgauze: Actually from the ME, Not pro-Muslim, Has a small output - that's Koufar. Koufar's music is best described as Right-wing, Lebanese Nationalist, noise.

#14. Skinflint
Repping: Botswana
Genres: Heavy Metal, Hard Rock
Years active: late 2000's-Present

What if Iron Maiden played songs about Botswanan mythology? Yep!

#15.Blakk Rasta
Repping: Ghana
Genres: Reggae
Years active: 2000's-Present

An Ahmadhi Muslim from Ghana grew some dreadlocks, and decided to voice his protests with reggae music.

#16. Marxman
Repping: Ireland
Genres: Trip Hop, Celtic Rap, Folk Hop
Years active: 1995-1999 [iirc]

I hate white rappers, but I have to give these guys credit for two reasons: 1. They were one of the main originators of the "Bristol sound", which became trip hop after cacs and former shoegazers took over/2. I know the producer, Oisin Lunny who's far from a Marxist nowadays [he's a corporate motivational speaker who DJs EDM on the side!]

[M-A-N of M-A-R-X, Here to break necks and give socialist sex]

#17. Black Randy and the Metrosquad
Repping: LA, Culture Vultures
Genres: Punk, Funk, Noise
Years active: late 70's

Jack "Jackie" Morris was adopted by a black couple in Harlem at birth, until he was a teenager he thought he was Black, after finding out he was white he hitchhiked to LA, and sucked a ton of dikks along the way. Well, that's the story he gave, no, Jack Morris was a coked out pervert who committed white collar crimes and thought copying Black people and young people made him cool. He ended up making watered down punk rock that's actually decent.

#18. Klaus Flouride
Repping: The Bay
Genres: Art Rock, Noise, Avant-Garde
Years active: 70's-Present

Klaus Flouride is more known as the bassist for the seminal West coast punk band, the Dead Kennedys. His solo stuff is more out of left field, yet not as frantic as DK.

#19. Basement 5
Repping: The UK, Jamaica
Genres: Noise Rock, Dub
Years active: 1980's

Roughly the same time Bad Brains started, Basement 5 was a mostly Black rock band that blended Reggae, Punk and Noise. Their most famous member was Malcolm McLaren, the Sex Pistol's official photographer.

#20. Homo Picnic
Repping: Philly, Dutch Antillies
Genres: Noise, Punk
Years active: mid-80's

Three Afro-Dutch students and a cac started a band that was meant to offend people, sadly, not enough people listened..

Part 4: New Music for Coli People

#21. Brujeria
Repping: Mexico
Years active: 90's-Present
Genres: Grindcore, Metal

Really a Mexican-American band with some gringos, Brujeria means Witchcraft in Spanish and claimed to be a bunch of drug dealers who picked up rock music. Most famous for their single "Matando Gueros" [Killing white boys], this track is guaranteed to make pigskins mad and flustered.

#22. A Girl Called Eddy
Repping: the US
Years active: 2004-???
Genres: Pop, Twee

Lemme start off by asking, Eddy, where the hell are you?! Her self-titled album was her only release and i'm fukking pissed about it, like damn. Apparently, she was shafted by her label after finding out she couldn't tour because of the orchestra she insisted on coming along.

#23. The Wave
Repping: the UK/Scotland
Years active: 80's-early 90's
Genres: Post-Punk, Punk-Pop

Like a lot of post-punk bands in the 80's, The Wake had a poppy sound with dark ass lyrics, would've been popular in the US if a goth band didn't share the name with them.

#24. King Khan and the Shrines
Repping: Canada, Germany
Years active: 90's-Present
Genres: Neo-Soul, Garage rock

It's a shock they're not more popular, kickass garage rock that feels genuine.

#25. The Gerogerigegege
Repping: Japan
Years active: early 90's, Present
Genres:: Japanoise, Noise Rock, Ambient

Their name means Vomitshythackhackhack, their most famous album is called Tokyo Anal Dynamite, they were founded in a gay S&M Club, and had sex with vaccum cleaners in live preformances. Yep.

#26. Boards Of Canada
Repping: Scotland
Years active: 90's-Present
Genres: IDM, Trip Hop, Ambient

Based on documentary film scores in 70's public school, these guys wanted to give off a sense of nostalgia in anyone who listens..well, if you ignore the references to cults, numerology, etc..

#27. Weedeater
Repping: The US
Years active: 90's-Present
Genres: Stoner Metal

I was a pretty square dude in high school, two summers ago I tried smoking weed for the first time with this girl I was friends with in graphics class, I was coughing like a motherfukker but I fondly remember her blasting this:

#28. Fatima al-Qadiri
Repping: Kuwait
Years active: 2009-Present
Genres: Electronica, Chiptune, Dubstep

Heard her on adult swim, had a huge crush on her back in the day, her work is based on Castlevania and her childhood during the Kuwait war

#29. KMD
Repping: East Coast, Malachi Z. York
Years active: 90's
Genres: Boom Bap

Remember when MF Doom and his brother Subroc were Black Muslims in the Bronx?

#30. Cerebral Ballzy
Repping: New York, Afropunk
Years active: late 2000's-Present
Genres: Hardcore punk, Shoegaze

None of that pissy, whiny white-boy punk, this is angry, street punk!
