Gaby Peñagarícano, legal advisor to WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto, makes it clear that there is nothing concrete to the recent twitter announcement of Oscar de la Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions, that a deal is practically done for a Cotto-Canelo showdown on May 2nd, Cinco De Mayo weekend.

'No. That is not correct. There is no agreement yet," Penagaricano said.

Talks for this bout will take several weeks but according to Peñagaricano they have not ruled out a potential rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

"The reality is that there is no agreement yet. None. For any fight. We are in talks, but an announcement that we reached an agreement for that fight [with Canelo] - it is not true. And a fight with Mayweather has certainly not been ruled out," Penagaricano said.

Even that date is up in the air, because there is still talk of a fight with Manny Pacquiao and Mayweather for the May date. Freddie Roach trains both Pacquiao and Cotto. One fight has to be ruled out to determine what Roach is going to do.

"That is a factor, but the fight of Pacquiao and Mayweather does not see real at all," he said. "In short, there is still no agreement for a fight between Cotto and Canelo. If there will be or won't be, we will know later on. The talks remain in progress."

As I posted in the Official Boxing thread where this mentioned, Cotto is obviously using Floyd as a negotiating tactic against Canelo/Golden Boy. There is something else they must want that Canelo hasn't agreed to yet.

Admitting he lost to Lara. Come clean Canelo.

Except Oscar stated yesterday that Canelo has already conceded on Cotto's demands including taking less $, and Cotto has had the contract for SIX WEEKS. Mayweather is keeping Cotto as his plan B in case an agreement cant be made for a Pacquiao fight and as a result, Cotto is waiting on bated breath. Canelo is Cotto's Plan B.

There aint going to be no Floyd/Cotto 2 and I am so sure of it that I will take a self-imposed one month ban from The Ring if Cotto signs to fight Floyd over Canelo.

:patrice: I can see why he would want to fight Floyd again. Another good pay day and he probably saw something in Floyd's fights against El Chino that he liked. Canelo will be there in September anyways..

I really wish he doesnt fight him again but if he did I wouldn't mind

Me either! I still consider the Cotto fight Floyds toughest bout. And that was a younger Floyd mind you against a no Freddie Roach Cotto. Bottom line- the Cotto that destroyed Martinez devastates the Floyd that fought Maidana in the rematch. That C, C- performance (as Floyd called it himself in the post fight interview) takes an L against Cotto.

Last I heard it was the purse split...

Cotto is willing to do the fight May 2nd instead of June only if he gets the lions share...
