According to Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum, this coming week will be a make or break period to reach an agreement on the welterweight mega-fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, which is targeted for May 2nd at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas.
The Las Vegas Review Journal spoke to Arum, and other sources, who denied a recent report in UK paper The Telegraph, which suggested a deal had been reached.
One of those sources was the head of Showtime Sports, Stephen Espinoza - who told the paper “not yet" when asked if a deal was reached. Mayweather has an exclusive contract with Showtime. Pacquiao fights under HBO, and the two cable giants are directly negotiating as well.
Arum, who promotes Pacquiao, said - “I’m very optimistic. We’re waiting to hear from Floyd. But from everyone’s perspective, it needs to get resolved this week. You have to start planning things, and there’s a lot that has to be done.”
