WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. is not going to allow Marcos Maidana to use the Everlast MX gloves under any circumstances. There was a lot of controversy before their first meeting on May 3rd, when Mayweather rejected Maidana's preferred gloves following their official weigh-in.
Mayweather claimed the Everlast MX gloves were manufactured with less padding around the knuckles, stating that it gave Maidana an unfair advantage. The situation was resolved only a few hours before the fight was scheduled to take place, with Maidana being forced to wear a different model of Everlast gloves - even though the Nevada State Athletic Commission had approved a different pair of Everlast MX gloves for Maidana to use.
Mayweather won a twelve round majority decision in May. A rematch is going to take place on September 13th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Once again, Maidana and his team are demanding to use the Everlast MX gloves. Mayweather is not considering their request. He alleges that Maidana's high percentage of knockouts (31 in 34 wins) are likely a direct result of using Everlast MX gloves.
"In the sport of boxing it's all about protecting both parties. Life after boxing, I care about my life after boxing. Its about being on an even playing field. Some fighters in the past, some fighters have died in the ring from gloves that wasn't padded. The only thing I want to do is be on an even playing field," Mayweather said at the ESPYS.
"You have to ask Marcos Maidana that question [regarding why his gloves are so special to him]. It's obvious he's been getting a lot of knockouts by fighting with gloves with no padding, which I don't feel is safe for me or for him. Both fighters should be safe and be protected, even though it's a brutal sport. This is not a bareknuckle brawl, this is not MMA. This is about professional boxing at it's highest, so it's about being on an even playing field."

Maidana responded:
"The gloves didn't feel comfortable, they felt like pillows," Maidana said Thursday before the final stop in the promotional tour for the fight. "It's an open issue. We're going to fight for my gloves. He probably won't want me to wear them, and if I have to wear different ones I will. At least I will have an opportunity to train in them this time."
