I thought it was essentially a dictatorship what are they voting on?
The current SLand President is not standing for a 2nd term. So, its an election on who to replace him.
This election is impressive in that there's one person, one vote. And Somaliland has a more developed civil society than the south. But the underlying issues remain.
But in the south, there is less oligarchic control over the economy so there is more competition and more growth.
Corruption is more advanced in the south though. Your average Somaliand minister steals a couple million dollars a year minimum. But they are taking home ten times that in the south.
The wealth in private hands is obscene... we are talking about a few billion dollars at least from a dozen families in the north alone in offshore accounts.
They could have kept Berbera port from UAE hands and built railways, power stations... instead they prefer to park that money in Djibouti, Kenyan and Dubai bank accounts.
