Meanwhile, that typical :mjpls: 'cism by the IMDb crowd towards any 'black' movie.

My only thing is after all these real life marches in response to the #HandsUp and #ICan'tBreath incidents recently I don't know if I fell like going to the theater and watch a movie based on the march in Selma Alabama. But I need to support black film though:why:

This review sold me on the movie, and I need to peep more of Bradford Young's work(the cinematographer), though I've seen Pariah, a really slept on black movie

While the film doesn’t deify its heroes, cinematographer Bradford Young certainly manages to make them all look extraordinary. From his work on Dee Rees’ Pariah, Andrew Dosunmu’s Mother of George, DuVernay’s Middle of Nowhere, and now this, only one inescapable conclusion can be reached: no D.P. in the history of cinema has shot black people more beautifully than Bradford Young. As DuVernay put it in the Q&A following the film’s AFI Film Festival premiere, “he loves black skin.” Too many cinematographers in Hollywood wash out their black actors with too much light or muddy the richness of their skin color with not enough light. Not Young.

If you’re skeptical, look at how Oyelowo is lit in some of his Hollywood fare versus how Young lights him in Middle of Nowhere and Selma. Most cinematographers of studio fare wouldn’t even dare try a shot in which dark-skinned actors sit in the shadows of a dark room—they wouldn’t know where to begin. Selma has some of its best scenes at night: whether a crowded jail cell, a car ride, or a late-night phone call to Mahalia Jackson, every image is lush. If you haven’t put Bradford Young on your Mount Rushmore of the best cinematographers working today, you still have time to remedy your mistake.

Why not a high budget film about the Montgomery Bus Boycott or the Sanitation workers march in Memphis.

Selma was the ultimate non-violent and non-segregation shyt. Marching for voting rights but, our votes doesn't mean shyt without having money to lobby politicians. Even MLK realized this towards the end of his life

The Montgomery Bus Boycott and Memphis dealt with economics. Which is our real problem as black people.

Make a movie about this MLK

Imma peep the trailer look dope but the soundtrack is killin me I hate when they put new age songs in period pieces ....I hope it isn't the case throughout the movie ..

It's not. That's just for the trailer.

So this is the best movie of the year. The true test of a movie for me is if I get wrapped up in the world and I really felt like I was watching a documentary for most of it. All of the performances are dope, it's a beautiful film to look at and listen to, and it's not only entertaining but obviously has something to say. The guy who played MLK (I really should remember his name) is incredible. The voice, the mannerisms, the attitude, everything about his performance was on point; he became MLK. And like a good movie, it treated it's characters as characters not stereotypes or archetypes. No one was perfect on either side of the argument and that's what makes it a perfect movie

Critics say "Selma" inaccurately claims LBJ clashed with MLK over civil rights
The movie "Selma" opens nationwide one week from Friday and it's already generating Oscar buzz and controversy. Some say it could be Oscar politics at work.

According to "Selma," President Lyndon B. Johnson clashed with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. over the Voting Rights Act and that's why King decided to march in Selma, where many black voters were disenfranchised, reports CBS News correspondent Jan Crawford.

Civil rights leader Julian Bond, who often worked with King, praised "Selma" but thinks LBJ did not deserve to be treated as a villain.

"He did support King's fight for voting rights. He probably is the best civil rights president America has ever had. The best. Absolute best," Bond said. "I think the movie people wanted Dr. King to have an antagonist. Why not have it be LBJ?"

LBJ loyalists agree. In an op-ed, Mark Updegrove, the director of the LBJ Presidential Library, wrote: "The partnership between LBJ and MLK on civil rights is one of the most productive and consequential in American history."

Former LBJ domestic policy aide Joseph Califano, a current CBS Corporation board member, added: "Selma was LBJ's idea."

Writer Gay Talese, who covered the Selma marches for the New York Times, disagreed on that point.

"I don't see anybody, historically or in any role, to have known that LBJ was the inspiration for that march. It's ridiculous," Talese said.

He said the film is true to the facts, down to the character flaws of both men.

"Johnson and King are dealt with as men of many moods and levels and temperaments. Complex people, both King and Johnson."

But historian Joshua Zeitz said the film is wrong to imply that LBJ ruthlessly tried to stop the marches in Selma, Alabama.

"The movie suggests that Lyndon Johnson ordered the FBI to blackmail Martin Luther King by sending him evidence that they had collected of his extramarital affairs," Zeitz said. "And there's absolutely not one scintilla of evidence to suggest Lyndon Johnson knew about it, let alone ordered it."

Still, Bond said people should still see the film to learn about the brutal reprisals in Selma.

"Unless you learn this, you'll repeat these things sometimes in the future, and we don't want to go through this period again," Bond said.

"Selma" director Ava DuVernay tweeted that LBJ's reluctance was not a fantasy made up for the film. It's worth noting the controversy erupted just as Oscar voters started selecting nominees for various categories -- a time when studios have been known to launch whisper campaigns against rival movies.
