true but you have to look at the appeals process for the federal government and a state like virginia. there's people that been on federal death row for 20 years plus that haven't been executed yet because the appeal process for them is still ongoing and the government is unwilling to impose the death sentence onto them. virginia is one of the states where the appeal process is very short and when the appeals process is over and done, they WILL execute that inmate. that's why the virginia sniper was able to get executed so quickly. virginia has executed about 100 inmates within 30 years AND only has like 7 people on death row. they don't play. the federal government has executed 3 people within 20 years and has over 50 people on death row. 1 of those opted to be executed when he withdrew his appeals. 2 were executed involuntarily after george w. bush signed off on them. it's NOT likely obama is going to sign off on his death warrant and it's VERY unlikely that the next president is going to do the same. the death penalty isn't as popular as it was 20 years ago. it's slowly dying so don't be surprised if the federal government does away with it as well as other states in the country. things are changing.
