I did a little looking around and it doesn't say anything about needing a n3DS. The box doesn't say it either. I think you'll be okay on just a 3DS

I don't own a 3DS but I thought there was a HDMI/VGA adapter you could use to play on your TV?

Apparently they're both the same until chapter 6 in each and then vary wildly.
Special edition was supposed to give us both games on 1 cartridge with a voucher for DLC
Luckily it's $80 all the same but still
