I saw the first half. What is he supposed to do when Vasquez can't keep his assignment in front of him? Only KG in his prime is going to be able to slow down Kyrie Irving as a big man in that situation.

JV was a net + in this game.

Cmon man he lost Mozgov several times at the basket, when ur the anchor you guard the basket first and foremost,he overplays the dribble and forgets about the basket, some ppl complain thats on the guards but its not its him...You dont pull yourself out of the paint and leave an uncontested dunk or layup behind you.

Your job as the 5 is to defend the basket first and foremost,if trashquez cant stay in front of his man and hits a floater so be it,its up to Val not to stray too far away it leaves the back end wide open.... 6:40 mark 1st quarter Bron to Mozgov illustrates that point exactly...

He may have been a marginal net plus because he scored 22 but his defense in the 1st half lead to about 5-6 easy buckets because he wandered too far away from the basket...

I wish JV injured his ass on that play just for the rest of the season and playoffs so we don't have to worry bout him in the playoffs:yeshrug:

The late 00 Pissed Ons and Celtics could defend Bron and bottle him up,they had the personnel to defend him,you have to be tough, physical and smart.

Our team defensively is none of those things.
Bron single handedly beat those pistons and put on one of the better performances ever to drag his team to the finals. He's always been borderline unguardable

He lost Mozgov a few times. But when your first line of defence gets broken down so quickly and easily, most big men are going to have trouble recovering to cover up that penetration, especially with a guard as quick who handles the ball as well as Kyrie Irving. I'm not excusing Valanciunas' defence, but I don't think this particular game was a glaring example of his defensive woes. He made some mistakes, but I don't feel his defence was as bad as you're making it out to be.

As a center, part of being the last line of defence is you have to stop the ball on penetration. The problem with Valanciunas is he gets caught in no mans land defensively because he doesn't commit to either guarding the rim or stopping the penetration. That, and his tendency to not recover back to the rim after helping on penetration are his biggest issues.
