To be fair to Al, look at the games he's calling. The Panthers and Bears put on a horrible display of football out there. He has to get hyped up over Bryce Young being unable to get a successful drive? Only one offensive touchdown being scored the whole game?

Plus, he went from NBC to Amazon Prime and this is his reward. Two seasons ago, he was calling the Super Bowl. Now, he'll be lucky to get tickets. :mjlol:

I think part of it is throwing a legend a bone when they want to work. It's hard to embrace the schedule of nothing but golf and sun when you're used to being in the game at the highest level.

I always suspected Madden walked away on his own terms because he didn't wanna go out flabby like Marv and Al, but he's the exception.

Or because all those bus rides across the country - he was notoriously fearful of flying - took their toll on his body.

Let us be clear:

Al Michaels has always been a trash broadcaster. Always.

He made a 40 year career off a fluke Olympic hockey victory in 1980.

He sucks. But he has always sucked.

I'm too young to remember him doing baseball games in the 80s, but based on highlights he seemed to be better at baseball than football.

Al Michaels is trash no matter what the sport is.

If you're talking football, you wanted John Madden in the booth.
Baseball, you wanted Vin Scully for professionalism or Harry Caray or Phil Rizzuto or Bob Uecker for personality.
Hockey is clearly Sam Rosen.
NBA, at least 25 years ago was probably Marv Albert.

Al Michaels is in that shyt tier of broadcasters that nobody likes and is probably a scumbag piece of shyt in real life: like Joe Buck, Brent Musberger and Mike Tirico.

He's one of those guys who just has a long career for no apparent reason. He's not GOOD.

Al Michaels and John Madden didn't serve the same role, Michaels is play-by-play, Madden was color commentary. The more apt comparison would be Pat Summerall.

I'd rather listen to the fukkin Tiktok lady voice call the play by play of a football game than listen to Al Michaels ever.

I don't know that I'd go as far as saying that Michaels has never been good, but I'd definitely say he's been overrated for the majority of my life. If we're being completely honest, Michaels has been relatively low energy for a while now, and a lot of people liked him off the strength of forcing pretty straightforward gambling references into his commentary when it wasn't legal in most of the country, and people acting as if he was slyly working that shyt in.

I don't think he sucks, but he has never been like Summerrall and Enberg, IMO.

He was terrible doing NBA games when ABC first got the package too.

I think a lot of these pbp guys are trash, especially the stars. Jim Nance is ass too.

In all my yrs of watching sporting events, I've never cared about who was calling the games. Its never been a big deal to me. I don't even have a favorite color guy or play by play guy. But if I had to choose I'm going with Aikman/ Buck, Troy was my guy in my teenage yrs when he was winning chips with them Boys and usually they called big games.
