speak on these 2 fights ski, what was the public perception on these fights at that time? and what made you think chavez would beat whitaker same with mugabi-hagler?
i was just watching the duane thomas fight with mugabi wondering how the fuk he lose to him, some strange shyt, im surprised mugabi never rematched him.
Nah, I thought Pernell would win and I thought he actually did but he was robbed. I didn't pick Chavez to win. I remember half the people in the Bed Stuy Boxing gym where I just started training picked Pernell to win because of his defense and smarts and the other half pick Chavez because he was that niqqa. I remember people (white people and media) wanting Pernell to lose because he was making fighters look bad and embarrassing them. I actually thought Chavez was a damn robot, this dude was NICE and gave no shyts, I was shook of Pernell losing but I knew he would win.
Now Mugabi and Hagler, I remember clear because it was the first fight on Showtime and that was huge in my family of sports. Pop dukes, uncles and my cousins was all watching the fight, I was the only one saying Mugabi would win and they ALL was like
........until the fight started. Mugabi was doing his thing and everybody was like
And me being the young dude I was feeling myself like
, niqqas started saying Mugabi was going to win and he was looking good until the middle of the fight when Hagler took over. It was dumb to pick Hagler but if anybody was to beat him it would be the Beast from Uganda. I remember yelling to the TV
"Mugabi........pretend like your kids are starving like the other Africa kids and you have to win to feed them!!" Them kids starved that night! Watching the fight in these times I still felt he could've and should've won. He went to shambles after that loss. Thomas broke his eye socket but I remember hm coming back and getting a belt only to get dropped by Terry Norris and Gerald McClellen in the first rounds (ashamed what happen to Gerald later on). I really don't know the whole public's perception because it was a different time and boxing wasn't really covered like today, I went on the opinions of my family and the older dudes at the boxing gym, dudes my age wasn't really into boxing heavy like I was
