14 Year-Old George Stinney, Jr. is Youngest Man to be Executed
The world continues to mourn the abortion of justice we witnessed Trayvon Martin, Troy Davis, Emmett Till, Renisha McBride, and helpless to stop the state-sanctioned murder of
Troy Davis.
As we mobilize and vow that
this time it won’t be in vain, the following heart-wrenching story reminds us that Black men have been legally lynched in this country since it’s inception — the fight is not over.
George Stinney, Jr. was only 14 years-old when he was murdered by the state of South Carolina at the height of the Jim Crow era on June 16, 1944 At 7:30 p.m. He was accused of killing two white girls, ages 8 and 11, with a rail-road spike.
No physical evidence existed in the case and the sole evidence against Stinney was the circumstantial fact the girls had spoken with Stinney and his sister shortly before their murder and the testimony of 3 white police officers who testified at a trial that Stinney had confessed to the murders. He was executed by electric chair.
Stinney was convicted of the 1st-degree murder.
According to Attorney
Steve McKenzie, who says that he is haunted by the case, George was allegedly offered ice-cream by detectives as they coerced a confession out of him:
The sheriff at the time said Stinney admitted to the killings, but there is only his word — no written record of the confession has been found. A lawyer with the case figures threats of mob violence and not being able to see his parents rattled the seventh-grader.”
According to records, over 1,000 people packed the courtroom
. The trial lasted one barely two hours and no Black people were allowed to enter the building; there is no transcript of the proceedings.
As reported by the Associated Press:
“Guards walked a 14-year-old boy, Bible tucked under his arm, to the electric chair. At 95 pounds, the straps don’t fit, and an electrode was too big for his leg.
The switch was pulled and as he was hit with the first 2400 V surge of electricity the death mask covering his face slipped off from George Stinney’s face. Revealing his wide-open, Tears streamed from his eyes and saliva coming from his mouth… After 2 more jolts of electricity, the boy was dead Witnesses recoiled in horror as they watched the youngest person executed in the United States in the past century die.”
Stinney was declared dead within 4 minutes of the initial electrocution.
