Yeah man, no disrespect but the residents of Ferguson need to wake the fukk up. How the fukk is a town with almost 70% black population have a cac mayor who has the audacity to go on national tv and say " we don't have a race problem?"And a police force of 95% cacs?
It's mainly because of the way st. louis county is set up on a local governmental level...there are all of these small rinky dink municipalities, that in all practical terms shouldn't even exist...very few residents of ferguson consider themselves to be citizens of the city of "ferguson", if that makes any sense at all...there is little to no distinction between "ferguson" or "dellwood" or "jennings" or random "incorporated" parts of north st. louis county...if you were to ride down the 3 or 4 mile stretch of west florrisant (the main street where most of these protests and things have occurred) from the point where it leaves st. louis proper ("the city" to locals) to where the street ends, you'd literally leave and enter 4 or 5 separate cities or municipalities, all with their own local government and police department...in the context of this discussion, the sum of effect of that is little to no participation politically in the most immediate local government...I'd venture to bet pretty much everything that before this situation, no less than 85% of citizens could not even tell you the mayor's name or pick him out of a line up...people know who the county executive is (Charles Dooley) and who the mayor of the city is (Franchis Slay), but nobody has a clue who the mayor of Ferguson or Dellwood or Country Club Hills are...voter turnout for local elections (which aren't done during November like national and statewide elections) is next to nothing...the mayor ran unopposed last time, so even if black folks turned out in droves it's not like there was a choice to be made...
I expect that will change this next go around because people are outraged...but honestly, it's gonna take more than a black mayor to fix what's wrong with ferguson (not to say that it doesn't need to happen anyway, i support a recall)...there have been similar inner ring predominantly black north county municipalities with black mayors and mainly black police departments (jennings, kinloch, pine lawn, etc.)...and ask anybody from the area of a certain age, and they'll tell you in no uncertain terms those were some of the most notoriously corrupt "whoop a nikka's ass" police departments in the whole area...but really what needs to happen is the complete dissolution of these small ass independent police departments, and have them be taken over by the county...there's just something about these small departments that inherently breeds corruption, poor organization, and a complete and utter lack of accountability...Eric Holder talked about the possibility of larger investigations into civil rights violations by ferguson pd, and outside of the pig that killed Mike get sent to the pen, that's the (realistic) outcome i want most out of this tragedy...i want FPD to be snatched completely and taken over, it's already happened to two of the neighboring municipalities (jennings and dellwood) and those areas have both become less of a headache to have to go through
