ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —The FBI has opened an investigation into the Albuquerque police-involved shooting of a homeless camper on March 16.

The FBI announced that it was investigating the James Boyd shooting in a news release Friday.

Earlier this week, the U.S. Department of Justice said it passed the shooting on to its criminal division for possible investigation. The FBI is a part of the DOJ.

Albuquerque police said its officers fired on Boyd after using non-lethal weapons first. Boyd had two knives on him at the time of the shooting, police said.

KOAT Action 7 News is following this story and will update it as soon as more information is available.

Dare I even mention race...? Dude pulls 2 knives out on the cops and they kill him, but the FBI is gonna investigate? Why not investigate the several other black men that died by unjust police fire?

I was wondering when you guys were going to talk about this.

FBI is investigating APD because they have killed 23 people in 3 years and this set off a lot of people plus it didn't the man was cooperating with police and was mentally ill. There were two protests out here the last 2 days. One last 12 hours and they had all of APD out there. They were marching up and down demanding the chief of police resign. They also climbed up on the I-25 freeway and stopped traffic to protest. Anonymous even posted a video against APD.

I feel by watching the video and hearing the background story that police use of force was warranted. I just don't feel they went through proper escalation of force though. They went from talking to killing and nothing in between.

How about using the non-lethal weapons first? Cats just started popping shots at someone holding a knife and then decided to bean-bag him after he was dead. That makes no sense.

Breh his back was turned and wasn't even attacking them though. I understand dude had a history but he was already complying with them though. How you gone shoot him, then bean bag and let the dog attack after? :dahell:

I agree with everything you said. Proper escalation protocol was not followed it appears. I do think the police did have justification for force though but they went from 0 to 10 with nothing in between. They should have tazered or bean-bagged him. I know those actions can some times be lethal but it would seem a better alternative to just dumping rounds into him and then using non-lethals.

Breh, the police out here don't even use logical protocol...There have been 2 other shootings besides this one in the past 3 weeks. They just use guns as a one stop answer before anything else for years now.
