I'm pretty sure lead character means protagonist the game it's centered around (ryu/ken, sol/ky, ragna/jin, akira, terry, etc.)

Main character implies who you always pick off top at character select screen
Lead character implies main story line/cannon character that leads the franchise
Being that this was made back in 2014/op banned
The interpretation was left very obtuse/ambiguous
It’s not that big of a deal sticklers
