Lee Morgan - The Sidewinder, Moanin'
Thelonious Monk - Straight, No Chaser, Monk's Dream, Underground
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme, Blue Train, Ascension, Interstellar Space
Miles Davis - Milestones, 'Round About Midnight, Kind of Blue, ESP, Nefertiti

Most of these are from the 50's and 60's, which is my favorite era for jazz. There are tons of albums that I love from that time, but these are the ones I listen to the most. You can't go wrong with these. They're the ones that always come to mind first for me.

other than herbie, john and miles are the only other jazz artists i'm really up on. i've heard some of monk's stuff but not nearly enough. i'll have to check his stuff out

obviously i've heard kind of blue, but yeah, "round about midnight" is nice. so smooth

never heard of lee morgan, i'll have to check him out. thanks

No doubt. It's all about what mood you're in really. Miles kinda has an album for every mood, or time of day. Coltrane and Monk are the same. Lee Morgan has great horns on all of his albums. You should like his stuff. I would check out Charles Mingus, Bill Evans, Art Blakey, Cannonball Adderley and of course Charlie Parker too.
