Finally gave it a listen , as I'm a man of my word. Ran it on my studio system while cooking my dinner, next best thing to the car test. Ran songs back as I discuss them.
Standouts: My Bad is far and away the best song on here. Energy is 2nd best. Dust In The Wind and 30 Minutes Late were good too.
Bad Standouts: February, The Way (see below, I'll explain), DC, Fulla Flava
Thoughts:
- Intro beat was wasted. It's better than several songs on here. He should have dropped a verse at least
- February sounds muddled to me, the hook is wack, and the theme goes in and out. Beat was ehh, but not the worst
- A lot of uninspired sounding lyrics and performances on the solo songs. Pharcyde is a "sum is greater than the total of its parts" group, they make each other better. I used to be in a group, sometimes it's just the competition factor, or you don't want your boys outshining you too bad. I'll expound later when I discuss My Bad. That will be its own section, I have a lot of thoughts.
- DC, I THINK I get where he was going, but the execution was just bad to me. Beats, lyrics, hook, would have skipped if I wasn't reviewing. Have it on again, since I'm typing about it. Probably the last time I will ever listen to it
- I would have either scrapped The Way, or made Lip redo his whole verse. He's kinda off beat, some real struggle bars in there, super short. Just not it. I'm sure you didn't want to waste the feature, but you outshined him, then Krayzie came and tapdanced on both of you. This was bad. Like Ras Kass on Ebonic Plague bad. You are cool because you did good, and it's not your album, but Lip looks completely out of place here. Terrible look.
- Fulla Flava - It's like he tried to bar out for the intro, but there were struggle and outdated bars aplenty here. A couple wouldn't have flown in the 90s when he first came out. The beat was weird, but if he freaked it, it could have worked.
- Dust In The Wind - One of Lip's better verses. Beat is cool, but nothing mind blowing. I think that sample needs to be left alone. Still not a skip. And I'm not a BTNH fan. I like about 5 songs of theirs total.
- Energy. Liked the beat. Hook was ehh, but not bad. One of Lip's best verses, sounds like he was really trying. @Sccit verse, while I don't like the delivery, is one of the best verses on the album. I'm sure some people want me to shyt all over stuff for fukkery purposes, but TripleAgent calls 'em how he sees 'em. Son got some bars. I would stick to the delivery at the start of The Way, personally. I truly fukk with this song, even though it's not my usual bag. This and My Bad are the only two songs I added to my Spotify playlist. These songs are the right way to go.
- My Bad. FIRE. Dope beat, scratching (a little sloppy, but still dope, a few other songs could have used it. BRING BACK THE DJ). You and whoever need to say and do whatever to get The Pharcyde to reunite and scrap these solo joints unless you can motivate Lip. If they are hesitant, try to get them to make an EP of My Bad and better songs, let that rock, and if it pops off, use it as leverage for a good deal, or just go full indie, whatever they want. This almost doesn't fit on the album because it's so much better than everything else. With the right beats and some chemistry, they could do a nice indie run. A quality new album or two and their back catalog could equal a gang of touring money. I saw them in concert once at a college show, they were decent performers. I enjoyed it even though I'm not into them that much.
Overall, I'd give it like a 6. Some flashes of brilliance here, some serious struggle in others. If you do another solo, you HAVE TO KEEP HIM MOTIVATED. Whoever the EP is has to make him perform, make sure the beats are appropriate and quality, and trim the fat. IMO, DC and Fulla Flava should have been cut entirely, as well as what I said about The Way. Some people may like February, but I would have cut that, too.
SIDE NOTE: While I'm at it, this album made me realize why I was never a huge Pharcyde album. All their best songs, they're rapping over retarded ass J Dilla (Rest In Power) beats. Passin' Me By is cool, but I can take or leave it. I put Drop on and immediately started rocking. They were never lyrical juggernauts (NOT WACK though, would never say that), but beats these good are like Jordan, they can carry you and make everyone around better. The beat is so funky, the humming instead of a hook works. The lyrics, when not spectacular, don't matter. The talking at the end, whatever. They could have let the beat ride, farted, it doesn't matter. I'm not saying they're trash, but they really got a blessing working with Dilla at that stage. If they reunite, they need to not find a copycat, my inner Hip-Hop Purist says no biting, but they need to try to imagine what a 2022 Dilla may sound like. I'm not sure if West Coast Funk type beats is what they should be doing. They also need deep grooves and samples. If you can't provide them an inspiring soundscape, you'll probably waste everyone's time. Hope they reunite and put out some ill shyt. I'm all for OGs doing their thing. Ageism in Hip-Hop is garbage.
