Let’s just get to the block quote now, because my head is still reeling from what could have been. SOHH found this South China Morning Post article on Fat Joe, and in it, Don Cartegena laid out an unexpected answer to a very general interview question

Do you have any regrets?

Man I got so many regrets. The biggest is that Eminem gave me so many demos – six different times he approached me and I didn’t sign him. Shame on me.

After reading that my mind raced with so many questions, but here are the five that were the most coherent.

1. How many Em/Pun collabos did we miss out on?

In the video for LL’s “I Shot Ya,” Joe had Pun in the background throughout his verse, and I would always get irrationally angry that Pun wasn’t the one rapping. That anger has now shifted to Em not being the one featured with Pun for “Deep Cover ’98.” Imagine someone actually having a response for the “Little Italy” bars.

2. Would Joe have become Dr. Dre-lite?

In this scenario, Eminem and Pun are Joe’s… Eminem and 50. Both are respectable MCs with pop appeal who have multiple collabos together. Joe gets so rich off his discoveries, revisionist history is made for his first three albums, JOSE is Detox, and we get a biopic on DITC. Also in this scenario, Em keeps Pun on his toes and he manages to give us more than two albums.

3. What if Em doesn’t pop with Joe?

Because Joe doesn’t have Jimmy Iovine and Interscope backing him, what if Em is seen as nothing more than a token white rapper, or at best a token white underground rapper? Multiple Clue freestyles and an East Coast record gets put out, but ultimately, would Em fall to hype-man status?

4. Wait, Joe had other acts. What if Em ended up like them?

After Pun passed, Joe still had the rest of the Terror Squad on his roster. Em could have enjoyed a similar career path to Cuban Linx, Triple Seis and Tony Sunshine. Right. Not really all that enjoyable.

5. What if Shady Records doesn’t happen?

This just raises even more questions. What if Aftermath doesn’t pop after that compilation album? What happens if 50 doesn’t get “In the Club?” Or what if Joe signed 50 instead of beefing with him? Would Ja Rule still be a wild success? Does Sway go back to radio without Shade 45, leaving Troy Ave and Iggy Azalea less embarrassed?

It’s all too much to think about, but in the end I prefer the timeline that assures Kendrick Lamar’s success. Or at least I will until the next time “Tres Leches” comes on.

lol @ Joe becoming "Dre lite" and having a DITC movie. the reason for an NWA movie isnt JUST becasue Dre was a member. NWA had a significant impact not only on Hip Hop but pop music as a whole in several ways ALL of which DITC can't match in the least. Em would have just ended up as some underground white cat that no one cared much about.

Look at how well he did with Big Pun. Also, the Slim Shady album was released as an EP before Eminem ever got with Dre. All Em needed was to get on a major, he was running with The Outsidaz so a lot of people had a chance to sign him.

Em needed Dre and you can tell the difference between EP/LP Slim.
