Religion is becoming more of a cultural marker. The holiness and sacredness have been stripped out of it and it's just been turned into yet another cultural identifier.
It's how you get bizarre takes from atheists like Dawkins who calls himself a "Cultural Christian" while supporting views that can be disproven with evidence and peer reviewed studies.
It's really wild how social media has warped society to the point where scientists can end up believing in insane shyt because of the financial incentives(ad revenue and patreon subs) that come with it.
If you start off saying this shyt to the swine for money on your podcast and the podcast blows up, then you do it on YouTube and start making thousands and then your Twitter posts pay you, you'll be stuck having to say that shyt indefinitely because the money is too good. Before you realize it, you're now in an echochamber and you can say the most basic shyt and these people will treat it like gospel. It's an addictive feeling and at the end of it you end up actually believing the easily disproven nonsense you've been getting paid to spout. Look no further than Jordan Peterson for an example of this. If he starts actually using his brain and the critical thinking skills he paid to learn in college and university, he will lose the audience he's built. The audience that has made him 10x the money he'd ever make from teaching legitimate science.

Sounds like it makes Dawkins and anyone like him the same as the preachers and pastors they bash.
I suspect most, if not all religious figures know they're spouting nonsense.
At the very least, history has shown that many people in the Catholic Church have privately expressed doubt in their beliefs. Or outright rejected them, even as they continued the charade.
Well perhaps Fareed or CNN is pushing an agenda.AGENDA
My main takeaway was the concern of what replaces religion in America.
That question is fair to ask on some level.
Though, I suppose Fareed (and all of us) could look to Europe for clues.

Religion can be a tool of liberation(Buddha sought to liberate himself from the chains of desire, Jesus sought to liberate people from hierarchy and greed)
But it can also be a tool of suppression(the catholic church in Africa and the Americas, buddhists in Myanmar)
Every form of religion gets corrupted no matter what ideals it begins with.

The "certainties" he references from Lippman were the lies upon which early industrialization were built. You were told by religions what your place was, what your "reward" was to be and when you'd get it. All it required - demanded - was belief. Rather than face the unknown, it was more expedient for people to pay that cost...even if was just lip service. That shared purpose drove things.
But as with all things, if it's built on lies then everything that follows is tainted. The religions switched from faith to money, and regular people now look to different middlemen as intercessors to that god.
